[livejournal.com profile] sabethea spoke wistfully of that meme where you take a photo of your bookshelves, so I thought I would continue my spate of inconsequential posts with my current shelves. I show off my proper ones all the time, but this is what I have in Brussels.

Bookshelf is ugly, books are beautiful. )

The first shelf is read until you get to Lessing, then Lessing to Undercurrents is in progress, and everything else (apart from the Guttenburg bible and the Hodgson Burnett biography) are unread. Of those unread, 20 are books I brought out with me at the start (I brought 50 altogether, I think, all books that I owned and hadn't already read, in some case having owned for over a decade and not read), and others are acquired in Brussels, in Amsterdam (a goodly amount) and in the UK on visits back. The pile of books at the end are French books bought with more hope than expectation of reading. The Persephone book is Heat Lightning by Helen Hull, about Suffragettes. I need to move everything back in 3 weeks, and there are only three I don't want to keep (the first three on the top shelf, if anyone wants to claim).

It is probably uncouth to urge, but I LOVE looking at other people's books, so if anyone else wanted to post theirs I would be most grateful.

I am pleased, if surprised, that I've managed to keep up with naarmamo so far, even if I'm not managing to post to the community. This week was Fringe previews, so lots of it is somewhat loose renderings of comedians.

Stick figures galore. )

I was cross to be awoken by the smoke alarm this morning, assuming one of my housemates was cooking without the wit to close the door and open the window. However, it turns out that actually there's a leak above the smoke alarm in the kitchen, which is now constantly beeping, and the ones in our rooms occasionally have sympathy spasms and shriek for attention. Apparently a Man is coming. I will be out seeing Wil Hodgson.

More amusing but in no way justifiable annotations in library books:

Bitter, meet smug. )

Also, I bought this badge in Stockholm:

Yay! I don't really know what it actually means (my friend thought that it was something about a grand slam), but to me it just means that I have a klubb. A club of FIRE and GRAPES, and a WEIRD BUTTON THING.

I am resurrecting a meme I last did in 2005:

"If you leave a comment, I will draw one [or more] of your interests VERY BADLY in paint. I can't draw even with an actual pencil, and I only have access to a touchpad mouse, so I cannot emphasise the VERY BADLY enough. EXTREMELY APPALLING and almost certainly BARELY RECOGNISEABLE interests, that's what's on offer."

You can go here to see the level of skill I am talking about. (If you did it last time, I will pick different interests.)

(This is part of a Plan to make me do more work. It might seem at first this this is a Plan with somewhat obvious flaws, but the idea is that I will work for a bit, draw some interests, then work a bit more and draw some interests, instead of not really doing any work, then having an hours long break of doing nothing. So do your bit by letting me have at your interests! Probably this meme will be the making of my thesis, and my Paint skillz will form the basis of the front cover design of its eventual publication.)

Solarbabies

I came back to a small heap of post. Ignoring the BL articles and the council letter about benefit that has it all wrong yet again, I leapt with alacrity to open the most promising package, which I had won on ebay shortly before I left for Berlin. It was Solarbabies. This is a film from 1986, starring Peter Deluise. Not that he gets the billing he deserves. It's a brilliant piece of cinema about rollerskating orphans in the future, with a generous side helping of ecological narrative. Online reviews are unsurprisingly scathing. Tall poppy syndrome, you see. My icon is of Solarbabies.

Spoilers! And pictures! )

Help take my mind off things.

Ooh! Lovefilm just sent me Ed Wood.
