I found I really enjoyed Fandom March Madness last year, and am looking forward to it again. Fans being funny in comments, lovely gif spams, getting to feel vaguely fannish again.

If anyone would like me to vote for their favorite character in any of the following fandoms that I don't know, tell me who and why and I shall probably do it:

A list. )

I'm voting Pam Poovey (Archer), Ray Holt (Brooklyn 99), Troy Barnes (Community), Chloe (Don't Trust the B), Jessica Huang (Fresh Off the Boat), Jane Kerkovich-Williams (Happy Endings), Mac (It's Always Sunny), Mindy Lahiri (The Mindy Project), Miranda (Miranda), Leslie Knope (Parks & Rec), Eliza Dooley (Selfie), Xiomara Villanueva (Jane the Virgin), Rae Earl (My Mad Fat Diary), Amber Dean (Some Girls), Sansa Stark (Game of Thrones), Isobel Crawley (Downton Abbey), Sherlock Holmes (Elementary), Saul Berenson (Homeland), Galina 'Red' Reznikov (Orange is the New Black), Mellie Grant (Scandal).

I think I'm supposed to offer to trade, but I dislike leaving options blank so I don't mind, much, at this stage.

The name Vorcullen was raised at afternoon tea wth yiskah and katlinel. Question: is there Twilight/Vorkosigan crossover fic and if not why not?

[livejournal.com profile] jekesta made a vid about Riptide, which I am linking to for two reasons.

1) I think it's a good vid.

2) As Jen says in her post, she has been making it for AGES. And having lived with the pain and trauma of no-one she loves doing anything that fits the music EVER, I think there should be some good to come out of it. It should be seen so that mine and Alice's (okay, and Jen's) suffering was not in vain.

It is not actually entirely Riptide, the verses are lots of various other fandoms. Some of them I even know (Prisoner (Cell Block H), The Persuaders, various incarnations of Star Trek), and I enjoyed it even never having seen Riptide.

Also, at the bottom of Jen's post, when she says that I suggested lots of scenes she could use but they were all from JUMP! Street, that is true*. I could pretty much have done that entire vid using only scenes of Hanson and Penhall. I'm not saying it would have been a better vid (all vids everything ever would be better with more Penhall), but we could all think it quietly to ourselves if we liked.

While I am doing this, I will also link to her webpage on nets, which is one of my favourite things. It makes me laugh every time I read it.

* ACTUALLY, when she first showed me the vid yesterday it had a small scene from JUMP! Street, but it seems to have been taken out now. HMPH.

[livejournal.com profile] antisoppist gave me R. It turns out that R is not a letter than crops up a lot in many of my likes and fandoms.

Rachel Conroy
From The Exiles and sequels by Hilary McKay. I love Rachel's utter inability to look nice for more than a moment, and her project to eat what they eat in books (belly pork!). I love that when she gets the sledge she wanted for Christmas she ignores all her other presents and then takes it to bed with her. I love that she steals her money back from the Post Office.

Rowan Marlow
Who is the second eldest daughter (third eldest child) in Antonia Forest's Marlow books. I think that Rowan would probably find me exasperating and somewhat low and heelish, but nonetheless I think she's pretty super. Especially leaving school at sixteen to take over the family farm, battling Cromwell on the train and taking Nicola for ices, and lipstick to fool the policeman when driving underage.

Arnold Rimmer
Without him, life would be so very much grimmer. He likes rules, even if he doesn't know them very well, and is a snivelling coward with huge issues about pretty much everything and an inability to pass exams.

Ravella
She appears in the first episode of Blakes 7, where her main contribution is to inform anyone that will listen that the food and water is "laced with suppressants!". I have never forgotten this, nor the sorrow I felt when it turned out she wasn't one of the seven. She would have been great.

Wayne Ross
This is a character from the Canadian show Robson Arms. I have never seen the show, but I imagine that sometimes he gets called "Ross". The main thing you need to know is that he is played by Peter Deluise. According to the show website, he's a pathological liar. But undoubtedly a nice, slightly puppyish, friendly and kind one. Because he's played by Peter Deluise.

In 2005 I went to Connotations with Jen, Alice, Liz and Sarah. (Other people were there too, but the car was filled with us.) Jen and Alice, I think it was, wanted to do the fandom secrets thing that was then not quite as overdone as it can be now, and had a little bit of wall for it. I found them recently, and went through and picked out my favourites - basically the ones for which I know the fandoms. Lots were from SG1 and SGA, which I don't know so haven't scanned.

10 postcards to characters. )

Yeah. It's ages ago now.

One of my guilty pleasures is those fics where it starts out as either an anti-Mary-Sue, or a parody, and then it turns into the most Mary-Sue character EVER. The kind of person who would outshine even Ayla's originality and adventure. Picture, if you will, an "average-looking" woman (because if they're not beautiful then the author has clearly managed to create a clever and original character!) with all the canon characters standing to one side with their gazes fixed upon her in various stages of platonic love, romantic interest, panting lust, rueful admiration, and probably one rather jealous looking woman. Then, to the other side, there is Ayla, with a thought bubble reading "no really, this is utterly unbelievable". I LOVE IT. It is even better if the author responds to any comments mentioning the Mary-Sueness with rolled eyes and an exhortation to read the summary, which will explain that this is not a Mary-Sue. Duh. I am re-engrossed in one that I thought had finished last summer, but it turns out is now finished, and has a sequel! A sequel that was updated a mere few days ago, and looks set to continue!

In the first piece, Our Heroine finds herself dragged to Middle Earth by some kind of magic. Oh, how tawdry and overdone. But wait! It is not her magic! There are two actual Mary-Sues who have (inexplicably) brought her along without her consent to be their sort of serving girl. And made her beautiful. There is a wonderful bit where the magic wears off and the Fellowship (naturellment) are unable to understand how happy she is to look normal. Things continue in this vein. Clearly she is Not a Mary-Sue. You should not be distracted by any of the following things:

Her quick wit that has everyone respecting her.
Saving Boromir.
Winning over every single character.
Becoming a sister to Boromir and Faramir, and a Lady of Gondor.
Elladan and Elrohir teaching her knife-fighting.
Being put in command of a regiment of men and teaching them about swordplay. And gender equality. (But not so much to respect girliness. She is rather Down on the trappings of femininity.)
Marrying Legolas. Yes, MARRYING LEGOLAS.

In the sequel, she somehow ends up in Hogwarts. With Legolas in tow. They are all rather bemused at this turn of events. Hermione has read The Lord of the Rings and is very bright about it all. Our Heroine teaches Harry to throw knives. She becomes a teacher at Hogwarts and gives them lessons in armed combat, during which she gets to rough up Draco. She is wise because she has already overthrown one Dark Lord, so has handy tips on how to deal with Voldemort. Mrs Weasley knits sweaters for her and Legolas at Christmas. Suddenly the other LOTR characters are also in Hogwarts. It is revealed that Our Heroine is a princess! But she doesn't like to mention it. This is because she is Not a Mary-Sue. Other evidence includes her fear of heights, which prevents her from playing Quidditch. Ah, such a sad loss to the British team. So. Our Heroine, Legolas, Elladan and Elrohir, Thranduil and Gimli are all in Hogwarts. There are rumours of Japes afoot between E&E and Fred and George. But things are not all amusement. There is Danger. Our Heroine is roped into the Order of the Phoenix (largely at her own insistence, because she is Wise Beyond Her Years), and she has to take Harry, Hermoine, Ron and all the straggling Middle Earthians to America. AMERICA. I am SO CLOSE to emailing her to ask her to get them to call in on JUMP! Street for some assistance. It would make my entire life.

I'm going to be sitting here, obsessively clicking refresh until the next chapter is posted.

(Also, my latest PhD draft proposal is apparently a really big step forward, and I can see where I'm going with it. But frankly, I don't really care as long as I have such fic in my life.)

Today, AS WELL AS doing (some) work, I made Jen a book. I now no longer feel the need to do Nano. Nothing can top this. Anyway, it's under the cut. Basically, you know the books "That's not my...dinosaur/fairy/tractor"? Well, read on, my friends!

HEAVY on the pictures. )
