I had an excellent discussion on Antonia Forest in the AF community trennels yesterday, ranging from Kingscote's academic status to Karen's success or otherwise as Head Girl. You should all go and join. I've also been making notes for a paper I want to write on AF, after a comment in brandnewgun's journal.

Today has not been overly productive work-wise, but I did manage to call estate agents in Lancaster to ask to be put on their mailing list for property, and got a ranges of responses from bubbly and optomistic to snooty about my chances of finding a non-Skerton property for such a meagre amount. I've also been chasing up references and honing my AHRB proposal. Should be sent off tomorrow. My supervisor has given me his reference in an unsealed envelope, I'm just waiting until everyone leaves (I'm working late tonight) and then I'm reading that baby.

Tomorrow I have an interview in the morning in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, so I get to have a late start from home. I've just about interviewed all the women I need, and I have my second interview with a male entrepreneur on Friday morning. Might just get this project done. Of course, it looks like one of the events is going to be a complete failure, although the others should be okay.

My computer is behaving itself much better now that it has a new power cord. While this is obviously fantastic, I'm a teeny bit sad that I don't get to go and buy myself a new computer. But I think I might get a DVD rewriter, as I don't have that much memory, and TMWRNJ is taking up a lot of space, as are the classic hignfy episodes.

What is a shell suit? Is it one of those wind suits, like for running? In which case, yes, but not matching pants and jacket. Mis-matched wind suits are even worse.

Also, I should specify that I was a CHILD for most of my unironic eighties fashion choices, and it should not be held against me.

This is a shell suit. And I think that the true horror of the shell suit was the matchingness and the all-over shiny brightness. So mis-matching is actually a step up.

I was a child for all of my unironic eighties fashion choices. And my shell suit was turquoise, so it was really rather fetching. Actually.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm. I have marmite sandwiches for work every single day, and I never get tired of them. And I still have marmite on toast for supper most days. Because it's a little slice of heaven. I wonder if there's a maximum weekly amount of Marmite that shouldn't be exceeded.

I admitted wearing jeans with different turn ups, but I should point out that (a) it was in about 1987 and (b) I sewed in the coloured turn-ups myself, which I made with Laura Ashley fabric scraps, so I think my youth and craftiness should count as mitigating circumstances....

I love marmite, but not quite as much as chocolate, so I had to choose that in the poll.

Marmite is odd, though: it's something where more isn't necessarily better. I once decided that I would treat myself to a *really thick* layer of marmite on some toast. Ha! I ALMOST DIED.

I have marmite on toast for breakfast every single day. It's the best routine in the world, get off the tube, turn the wrong way for work out of the station, go into Benjy's and watch them make my toast on marmite (only 60p) while also watching them make all the other breakfasts, eat hot toast on the way to work. £3 a week on breakfast doesn't feel much of a luxury either, but it's so good having someone else make you breakfast each day.

*clueless* Explain how DVD rewriting works, now. Can things be then watched on the television? What does one need to make the writing-to-DVD thing happen, special DVD writer thing?

(Possibly this should have been My Question but it's quite dull and factual and not exciting or anything. Sorry about that.)

It's like a CD rewriter, only for DVDs! Alternatively, it's like a floppy drive, and it stores files/media on DVDs. If your dvd player plays the right format, then you can watch the files on TV in a normal way. To make it happen you need a DVD RW drive. The ones I have been eyeing up are about £90 for all formats external drives.

Really what I want is for my dad to buy an external DVD writer, and then I can borrow it and transfer all my files to dvd. Or anyone to have one I can borrow.

The last time I had marmite it was just before I came down with the evil vomiting bug, and I haven't been able to eat it since. So sad. But I always preferred vegemite anyway.

...I used to really want a shell suit. This was in about 1990 and I was 6 years old, but even so. There was this girl at school who had one, and I thought it was the height of cool. But my mother refused because she hated them. Sensible mother. But oh, I did so want one...

At about the same age, I ordered a marmite sandwich from the restaurant of the Forte Posthouse in Edinburgh and was horrified when it arrived and they'd spread the marmite like jam. The chef dude didn't understand marmite and thought that was what you did. So Mum went and demonstrated how to make the perfect marmite sandwich, and all was well.

Mmm, marmite. I like marmite.

Aw! I know, sometimes mothers are right, bless them. I look at childhood photos and think that maybe my mum could have done a leetle bit more supression. But I guess it's good that she didn't.

Do you get bitten by midges and mosquitoes? Someone told me that marmite consumption makes you repellent to the little beasties, and with the midge season imminent I might have to start eating more. But I like it thinly spread - I'm more a cheese toastie girl myself.
But yay for stripey socks.

I don't really get bitten much at all. But our family reason for me not getting bitten is that when I was eighteen months we were in Malaysia and I used to eat the mosquito coils. My sister eats quite a bit of Marmite (though not as much as me) and she gets bitten loads.

My mum always refused to buy me big pink frilly dresses and things. At the time I hated her, but looking back I am pleased by the lack of embarrassing photos. She also refused to let me have a veil and gloves for my first holy communion. Again, pleased about that now.

My personal 80s sock innovation involved wearing two pairs of socks at once so that the tops of the underneath pair peeped out over the tops of the outermost pair. Favoured colour combinations were turquoise/hot pink and grey/fuchsia. I'm surprised people around me didn't go blind.
