Rape jokes, poster

Further to Ellie Levenson's blanket approval of rape jokes, I really like this post by fugitivus about rape jokes. It's from a month or so ago, and I'm afraid I forget where I saw it being linked.

The other day at university I took this poster down from the women's toilet:

The smaller text says "text DRINK" to the NHS number. I discovered while googling for that that it's from 2006, which makes me feel slightly better, though I don't know why.

It makes me absolutely furious, this kind of victim-blaming shit, done under the guise of "we're helping women to protect themselves". Even if the problem were women's behaviour, this kind of campiagn doesn't change their behaviour, it just makes them feel that they are guilty if something does happen.

I have to say I'm glad they've brought this one out, I know its not the same topic, but I'm glad they've redressed the imbalance of this one now.

Wow - look at the difference in user comments - "whores will be whores", vs "hot boy", "looks like he had a good night".

Oh...wow I didn't actually think to check the comments when I'd worked out I'd found the right ads but those are awful. I think I was so pleased they'd finally decided to bring out a male version instead of just being all pah women and drink they bring it on themselves I just stopped at that.

Yeah - I think it is good that they've got a male version too, and I suppose they can't really be held responsible for youtube idiot comments, but it is part of how the attitudes to drink and gender are so different that parity isn't really a sufficient answer.

re the comments true, and yes I think you're right. The fact that its taken so long for the male version to come out is testament to that. I think they really need one in the same style about street harrasment and inappropriate sexual behaviours to show what pissed up laddish behaviours feel like for the person on the receiving end.
