DeLuise ice cream

Is licquorice much more popular than I imagine, or is this some kind of DISS?

favourite

The original post's tagged "I like them all", but licquorice??? Really? I am baffled by that being (apparently) used to represent a flavour it would be hard to choose between. Cookies and Cream and Choc Mint I think are both flavours that I would recognise as generally being considered lovely, but licquorice is HORRIBLE. (Am I wrong? Is liquorice an acknowledged flavour of loveliness?) I think I'd use something like Chocolate Fudge Brownie as the third, if I were going around making ice-cream based comparisons to DeLuises. Special enough to convey that it's great, generic enough that it's a clear people-pleaser even if its not your personal preference... undivisive. Surely the DeLuises aren't divisive?

It is the final days of the Fringe, and I am trying to work out what I want to make sure I see before the end. This evening I'm going to see a book festival event about women as protagonists of action books, and tomorrow I'm seeing Baconface. At the weekend I've booked to see Tig Notaro, Richard Herring's Edinburgh Fringe Podcast (because Baconface will be a guest), and Comedy Countdown. I think I'd also like to see The Dark Room (a sort of guide through a choose your own adventure books that always ends in death), and The Play That Goes Wrong (a farce). Of my original list, the ones I haven't seen and would like to are Nat Luurtsema (but not really wanting to queue for 1hr+ to get in), Jessica Fosteskew, and Jennifer Wong, all on the free fringe. I would also happily see Piff the Magic Dragon, and Seann Walsh (who is nominated for the main comedy award) but have recently seen my bank balance and might not be able to justify everything.

The comedy nominations are out - I've only seen two of the main award, Bridget Christie (BRILLIANT) and Mike Wozniak (disappointing, and I'm a little surprised he was nominated for this, though I only saw a preview). I've only seen Aisling Bea of the newcomers, but she's the clear front-runner. Good hula-hooping skills. I was so inspired I searched and found a class in Edinburgh for hula-hooping (the other hula hooper I saw this year was a burlesque act who ended up hula-hooping with his penis. I was not so very inspired by him), but it was only running this summer, and I haven't had an answer to my email asking if they're doing it again. What I have done is arranged a first session with a personal trainer who can come into my work gym. She is going to help me have strong arms, partly because I would just like to be strong, and partly so that I could maybe go back to aerial skills and get more out of it. I emailed her and said I wanted to be stronger, and didn't want to focus on weight/fatness/food intake at all, and she actually listened and it didn't come up at all in our introductory chat. I am now a bit nervous about the first actual session on Monday, but quite looking forward to it. I am terrible at self-motivation, but I rather like exercise-type things when you're told what to do. There is apparently a lot of resting in weights as well. I'm not bad at resting.

MORE POSTS ABOUT EDINBURGH FRINGE SHOWS! *taps fingers impatiently*

I was very excited when I saw the news about Aisling Bea yesterday! Hooray for her, I hope she wins.

I will, I will! I think I need to break them down into manageable chunks. At the moment I just have the one list and it's a bit daunting.

I hope so too! She's been getting rave reviews, so it seems pretty likely.

Was the licorice comparison made by a Scandinavian? Finns used to flavour cough mixture with salt licorice to make it more palatable. I used to wish they wouldn't.

Ha, I was going to ask the same thing. The new Swedish sweet shop near work seems to be divided into licorice, extra strong licorice, extra salty licorice and other flavours are available.

I love licquorice! And aniseed, and fennel. But not in toothpaste - that's just wrong.

Yeah, I imagine it's a loooong list.

Do it by 8-show chunks. Imagine the horror* if you forgot to record your thoughts on the shows you've seen...

* Puppy-like disappointment, from me.

I don't know, I can't find the original tweet any more. I hope that the DeLuise love has indeed spread to Scandinavia.

I love licquorice (except possibly the Scandinavian salty version) and am generally perplexed by people who don't. I would probably assume it's meant to represent a 'love or hate' sort of taste, like Marmite (I do like Marmite but would probably draw the line at Marmite ice-cream), but I don't really know anything about the divisiveness of Deluises.

I got given salty strong licquorice when I was in Finland. I rbought it back for the work sweets table, and one person was DELIGHTED.

I can just about abide licquorice in licquorice allsorts, but other than that it is beyond me. In ice cream sounds dreadful.

I can't imagine anyone hating Michael DeLuise. He is so lovely!

I like Salmiakki (the salt licorice that is really ammonium chloride) now but it took me four years. I still don't like proper licorice or aniseed and last night nearly spat out braised fennel at the dinner table.

Licorice is the work of the devil so I would assume that the DeLuise associated with the licorice is the EVIL KING OF EVIL. Cookies and cream makes no sense to me as a flavour because the flavour of cookies depends on what you put in them. So I would have to opt for chocmint DeLuise, which is probably wrong, therefore that poster is all wrong.

That talk at the book festical on women protagonists in action books sounds good. I hope Modesty Blaise gets mentioned.

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2013-08-22 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Modesty Blaise did get mentioned! But only in passing. The talk was actually a little disappointing. It was billed, and introduced, as a discussion about why there are female heroes in children's fiction, but they disappear in adult fiction, and there was very little discussion about that at all. It was all a bit superficial and disjointed. But John Marsden was one of the panel and he was very interesting.

Actually Chocmint DeLuise is Peter DeLuise, so that is very right!

[identity profile] katlinel.livejournal.com 2013-08-22 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Pity about the discussion. Sounds as if the participants might have needed to do more preparation on the actual topic, so I am glad that at least one person was interesting. People should talk more about Modesty Blaise, though, I think.

I will forgive the poster for its mention of licorice if it is being an accurate guide in One True Path of DeLuise.

The question of DeLuise divisiveness made me look up licorice ice-cream to find out if anyone makes it - couldn't see any brands, but some recipes and ecstatic encomiums. So perhaps Michael is trickier to get hold of, but some people are totally smitten by him?
Also, good luck with the strength.

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2013-08-22 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He totally is trickier to get hold of! He doesn't post to twitter, and he isn't in stuff as much as his brothers. Wow, I was totally wrong to judge licquorice's inclusion.

Thank you. I suspect I might give up quite early on, but perhaps I will take to it instead.
