(no subject)

I can't decide whether my least favourite part of having malaria is the diahorrhea, the vomiting, the inability to sleep, the extremes of temperature, the all over body ache, or the constant metallic soap taste in my mouth.

Malaria??? Oh my.

My dad had it many times as a small child in Nigeria, but doesn't really remember. Maybe it is just as well.

Please shout if there is anything at all that we can do?

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you. Just comments is nice! I'm trying to get some work done as I don't seem to be able to rest without feeling sick.

Having it as a child must be horrid, it wipes you out so much.

Oh lor. So sorry you got the beastly thing. Though it will look good in your memoirs. Hope you feel better soon. x

[identity profile] nineveh-uk.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Though it will look good in your memoirs

I was thinking the same. Lifelong ability to one-up people talking about their travellers diahorrhea at parties.

But it sounds horrid. I hope that you feel much better soon.

[identity profile] sam-t.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
Dittoing all this. Despite the fact that you are engaging in a long and respectable literary tradition, I hope you feel much better soon.

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I am enjoying being part of a literary tradition now that I feel less like death!

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed! As long as I stay away from those who got typhoid themselves.

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
My memoirs will be livened up no end. I enjoyed your facebook comment as well, once I had the anti-emetic that enabled me to actually look at a screen again.

[identity profile] steepholm.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yuck - how horrible for you. I suppose it's a good excuse to drink tonic water, at least - and who would do that without gin?

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
What a good point!

[identity profile] lsugaralmond.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Poor you I'm sorry. But at least it's a bit windswept and intrepid. Think of the cachet.

I do like the cachet! And having legitimate things to moan about.

Mooooooo! Poor you! (That was meant to be 'noooooooo', but you can pretend I'm making cow noises in sympathy, because obviously that is a logical thing to do. Or something.)

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried to comment on your moving post to saw aw, flat of happy memories, but it wouldn't let me. And the cow made me laugh :)

[identity profile] callmemadam.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, poor you. Hope you feel better soon.

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, seem to be heading in the right direction now.

[identity profile] katlinel.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. That sounds horribly, horribly all-encompassing. Does one still drink gin and tonic for the quinine for malaria? Or is that some sort of colonial myth?

Get better soon.

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is a colonial mt=yth, but certainly one that's worth taking notice of.

[identity profile] alitheapipkin.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
*wince* Poor you, hope you feel better soon!

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks - I'm hopeful I'm getting there now!

[identity profile] khalinche.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear, I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, I seemt o be on the mend now.

Joining in the chorus of sympathy! Look after yourself and hope the metallic soap taste goes away soon (and the rest).

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I have managed to taste things now, and 7up is helping with the taste.

[identity profile] mockduck.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Bah, that sounds entirely rubbish - at least it could have the grace to let you sleep through the miserable symptoms.

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It is truly rubbish. Finally managed a bit of sleep this afternoon, as my line manager lent me his flat with a/c for the day and that helped.

[identity profile] thereyougothen.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaargh! How perfectly dreadful. Hopefully malaria meds will work with gin and tonic,
Because you *must* be able to have at least one of those a day!
Feel better soon!

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it will be an important part of my recovery!

Malaria! Ugh! What a horrible horrible thing, poor you. I hope you're OK. Are people bringing you meds/liquids/other things that can help? xx

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The vomiting got so bad I ended up back in the clinic on a rehydration drip and anti-emetic, but they gave me an intravenous antibiotic which seems to helped immensely already.

[identity profile] orionnebula.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
How yucky. But at least you have an exotic sounding illness? Feel better soon!

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been trying to console myself by pretending to be in Little House on the Prairie when the Ingallses get malaria. Feel better already, thank you.

[identity profile] anglaisepaon.livejournal.com 2014-10-29 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Good grief, they really worked their way around the diseases, didn't they?

So glad you're feeling better. Sending good thoughts your way, and a photo of Kiera Lovely Knightley, because of the loveliness. See, she even brings hot drinks!

Well all of that sounds horrible. Poor you! Are you being looked after? :(

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-29 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I am yes, men have been cooking for me and worrying about me which is very pleasing.

[identity profile] irrrtum.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I am just thinking of all the anecdotes you'll be able to airily weave that into in the future: "oh I had malaria at the time". Get well soon, though. It sounds truly horrible.

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-29 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm feeling a little better now, but hoping the clinic can give me another anti-emetic as the first one has definitively worn off.

Tch. All the comments seem to think this is very cool of you, but I think you should know I'm just quietly disappointed in you. Weren't you supposed to not get malaria?

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-29 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Plans change, Mnn. Plans change, and you get plenty of time collapsed on the bathroom tiles vomiting copiously to consider what a mistake that was.

[identity profile] girlofprey.livejournal.com 2014-10-28 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no Clare! Hope you feel better soon. If it makes you feel any better now, I'm currently having a period that means I have to keep playing the 'is this feeling hunger or nausea?' game. That's not quite as glam as vomiting. But still.

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-29 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that's never a fun game. My vomiting is sadly not glam at all, and isn't even satisfying once its done, which is most unfair.

[identity profile] meaningrequired.livejournal.com 2014-10-29 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
!!! That is awful!

I really hope you start to feel better soon, and you're trying to work?! I really hope it passes as soon as it can!

[identity profile] pisica.livejournal.com 2014-10-29 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yuck. I hope you feel better! Hopefully you can at least tick a box on the Expat Disease Bingo Card.

And now you can read this book with an insider's knowledge, possibly with a smug expression:

BOOO MALARIA IS RUBBISH. I hope you are feeling better now!

[identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com 2014-10-30 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
I am, much better. It turned out I had malaria and a bacterial infection and dehydration, so although I'd started to feel a bit better on Monday after the first tablets, the vomiting got severely worse and I spent Sunday at the clinic on a drip for rehydration getting intravenous antibiotics. So that was exciting. Yesterday was already improved and I didn't vomit at all last night!!! Kept a whole pot of yoghurt down!

Though I did spent the time not vomiting with a very convincing physical sensation that my teeth were crumbling in my very mouth and having to check constantly on them with my tongue. Still not sure they're all there.

[identity profile] whatsagirlgotta.livejournal.com 2014-11-03 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
Bah, this sounds not at all fun, hope you're on the mend now.
