I went shopping this morning and bought:

some hair dye
a maternity dress (this is not an Announcement, it is pretty, has room for my belly, and was in a charity shop)
some new glasses (using my JSA voucher, and they came with a free pair of prescription sunglasses too)

What have you bought in the last week? Other than groceries, rent and bills. I am curious about your purchases though.


Tonight I am going to the campus comedy thing, and Jon Richardson is headlining. I think he is one of the funniest people currently working. Also I have been mildly obsessed with him for about three years now. In any case, I am very pleased. Andi Osho is also going to be there, apparently, and Jimmy McGhie who I've never heard of. I thought Andi Osho was good on MTW.

A study in the US found that single, 36-49 year old black women's median wealth is $5. There are no zeros missing from that number. Five dollars. White women of the same age and partnered status have a median wealth of $42,600. I can't really understand this, I think - it's such an immense difference that I keep finding myself assuming that there must have been some sort of mistake in the numbers. $5000 would still be an immense drop from $42,600. Even looking at it more broadly, among all single women, white women's median wealth is $41,500, and black women's median wealth is $100. I don't know if there is any comparable data in the UK. Race works differently in the US, but I hardly think that the UK is likely to be as post-racial as neo-liberal commentary likes to make out.

(The report is about women's wealth, so it doesn't have much data in the press release about how race affects men's wealth - but white single women have about 61% of white single men's wealth.)
