I have returned from abroad in the traditional manner - put my washing in the machine, bought a new sim to replace the one I inevitably lost while away, and reflected sadly on how much of my tan turned out to be general grubbiness. My holiday was well-timed because I have already acclimatised to the weather being far too hot and humid in West Africa, so I am no more than ordinarily grumpy about the heat today (and it is significantly cooler in Edinburgh than much of England).

On my way home I stopped by Slough, where [personal profile] felinitykat and I went to see Taskmaster being recorded. We were quite worried about getting in, and being far far too hot, and even that it might not live up to expectations, but we DID get in, the heat was MANAGEMABLE, and the recording was FAB. It was Kat's first time at a recording and I worry she might have unrealistic expectations now. We were sitting bang in the middle of the front row, and unlike other recordings I have been to, this row was not at all blocked by cameras, so we had an incredible view. I worried a little that Greg might feel my gaze burning into his soul and be put off but if so he carried it off with aplomb.

I am VERY EXCITED about something but it's Jess's news to tell so I have to wait until she's told the internet at least somewhere.

More excitement re: Jess is that we have booked our Antarctica tour for December 2020. This timing is to coincide with the total solar eclipse in Patagonia that month, and also the year, if not the month, will mark 10 years of us travelling together. The trip is one that attempts to go below the antarctic circle (though it's early in the season for that so we have to be sensible about our enthusiasm) and we are also going to spend a night camping on the actual land. It is VERY expensive, but since booking I've noticed that we get to keep the expedition parkas, so really we got a free trip and an extortionate coat.

I am trying to cook some new things, starting with this: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2019/mar/09/vegan-creole-rice-burnt-peppers-jambalaya-recipe-meera-sodha . I don't think I added enough stock and then I forgot to turn off the heat for the last 10 minutes of "resting", so it is quite dry. The burnt rice bits from the bottom are tasty, though, even if it is clearly too hearty for summer. In a charity shop today I found Ottolenghi's Jerusalem for 50p, so that is something to look forward to not getting around to. It's got a recipe for khatchapuri in it, which Jess, Nine and I ate gleefully in Georgia, so maybe maybe one day.
