This morning when I was swimming I miscounted my backstrokes and smashed my head into the tiles. And the week is going to continue to be this horrible until about Thursday evening.

It would comfort me greatly to know that it is not in fact the case that everyone else is doing brilliantly, so if you would like to have a grump in the comments, that would be lovely. Sod positivity.

Ouch! poor you. You mean you're going to smash up other parts of yourself until Thursday evening? Stay in bed with a laptop (but mind your knees).

Hopefully I will avoid actual physical repeated injury, but there is horrible work to do, and when I am grumpy the iniquities all roll into one horrible thing.

I mustn't stay in bed! Bed vanquishes all my good intentions.

I fell over while running through the dining room in yesterday and have a huge purple bruise on my knee. It is hurty and thwarting my training plans. Hmph!

And whyyyyyy do I have to be in charge of the work experience person again?

Roll on Thursday evening!

Temping in hateful call centre. Have to pretend to be upbeat and cheerful person so they give me a good write up. Eight hundred and ninety nine other employees actually upbeat and cheerful people. Feel like I'm i Stepford Wives. Send Help.

Also, ouch, your poor head.

Woe :-( I used to do that when I went swimming, became too paranoid to do backstroke anymore (now I just don't swim)

Today is grey and a monday and I am convinced I have swine flu (probably unreasonably) and I managed to go over on my ankle on the way into work so 1) it's sore 2) my socks are wet as it was right into a puddle.

I don't even swim that fast, so it seemed safe! But alas no. I don't think anyone saw, but it was rubbish.

I am sorry about your ankle. I always find that really scary, it feels like it should have broken because it hurts, and then it's slightly annoying when it's not a proper injury.

Are they really? You must make it your mission to break at least one person before you leave, so that there can be a domino effect of anger in the call centre.

Did the pleasure of having a minion wear off some time ago? I wihs I'd had cool work experience. Though mostly what I did for work experience was go and learn to ski in the Alps. But I could have had work experience at uni, though goodness knows what I'd have done. I feel like my life is a series of wasted opportunities at the moment.

BOOOO to hurty knee! Does the purple match your skating dress?

Having a useful minion would possibly be great. But in my entire career I've only had two workies who I really thought had the potential to be good journos. Usually it's really time-consuming explaining things it would be much quicker to do myself.

I suspect I'm not that good at managing people. I was a deputy editor in my last job and I hated it. Nothing I delegated was ever done just exactly as I wanted it!

The purple might match my skating dress, but is a horrible clash with the red skirt I'm wearing today. Bah!

Having got up early in order to make it into work by nine for once, the bloody bus was early and the driver pulled away just as I neared it. The next bus was then late.

I did that years ago at a school swimming gala and to this day I stop at least two metres short of the end whenever I swim backstroke, so I know how traumatic it is.

It's raining? Will that do? I am unreasonably upbeat at the moment for a grey gloomy Monday.

Well, I just lost half the draft of a loooong post because my sodding connection went down for a mo. Plus I am fed up with (a) the weather, (b the ludicrous design of women's bodies. Intelligent design my arse, the world was constructed by Bloody Stupid Johnson.

1. My penfriend Sarah e-mailed me to say that her family are having to fix a date for her mother's life-support machine to be switched off.

2. My baby sister has Swine Flu and I am frantic with worry in deeply irrational way.

3. The bathroom basin is draining so slowly it might as well be called "blocked".

4. I barely slept at all last night. Again.

5. The weather is horrible. This makes me woeful.

6. Am about to post off a cheque that pretty much cleans out the Brownie Bank Account, as we have to pay the entire accommodation fee for the cancelled pack holiday.

7. Am still on a migraine a day, every day. Which = an injection a day. Which = thighs that are just one giant bruise.

8. The spasm-y muscles in my shoulders seem to be seeing just exactly how tight they can wind themselves. This is Very Painful Indeed, should you be wondering.

9. My knee gave way as I was going up the stairs earlier. This hurt. And startled me something rotten.

10. I am coughing up yuck. Again. Ugh.

Hope your bumped-head is less sore soon.

x

Despite having had a very good weekend, I must mention the following:

- I appear to have acquired something that might or might not turn into a cold, as NEVER EVER happens when I spend the weekend in Manchester.

- It took me 4 hours to do the 2.5-hour drive up there on Friday, as apparently the whole universe was heading north and the weather turned apocalyptic around Birmingham; and then yesterday I took a 40-mile detour to avoid the M6, as everyone was driving in a frankly terrifying fashion on a very rainy day with no visibility, and I didn't want to end up in a pile-up.

- The amount of lab-work I have to do this week is, quite frankly, beyond comprehension.

I really feel that there is far too much work expected of us on phds. How am I supposed to fit in my important sitting and whining when I am constantly having to write things that about three people will read anyway?

Yuck to the horrible surroundings of a very good weekend.

BOOOO. Your list is comprehensively horrible. I hope the things that can get better get better, and that everything else is no worse than it has to be.

I fully expect to have a miserable work week this week, due to multiple deadlines and launches, everything landing on my lap and decisions other people made several months ago now inexplicably being laid at my door. OH GOOD.

I've done it before but that was ages ago and I thought that I was better now I'm more grown up. But I'm NOT.

I suppose I can't actually grump at your upbeatness! It is gloomy here but not actually raining.

The buses are all over the place. It doesn't matter in term time because there are so many, but now it's holidays there are only two an hour, and it makes a huge difference.

Man, it is, isn't it? I think if a book is going to be disappointing it should at least be short, so I don't feel as though I've wasted my life on it. And given that imho most of the first hundred pages were disposable, it could easily have been a fifth less disappointing.

That is quite horrid of the tiles not to MOVE POLITELY out of the way really.

I pulled something in my ankle so no running until it stops making me go ow and omg I was doing SO WELL with the running. And I spent most of yesterday in bed because of WOMANLY TROUBLES that refused to sod off despite shiny painkilling drugs and hot water bottles and lots of swearing.
