Mitfords

I can't remember who it was, but recently I assumed someone was into the Mitfords, and it turned out that they weren't at all. I have to learn not to assume that people I like also like the things I like. I only do it with things I think are widespread anyway - I don't automatically think that people will like either Keira Knightley OR Peter Deluise, much as they should.

Anyway - to ease my troubled mind, do YOU like the Mitfords?

More an in general interest than liking, I suppose - I don't like Diana, but I am keenly interested in the Mitford family in general, and especially Decca.

I sort of took against the Mitfords on principle just because EVERYONE loves them so much. I think they are probably actually very good. I like that one was a nazi and one was a communist.

I tend to defensively assume everyone either does or will hate everything I like. And then, when I run into someone who does like the things I do, I JUDGE THEM REALLY HARD for the reasons I have always assumed people have been judging me. It is VERY DIFFICULT being me. You wouldn't think from the way I hold it together, I know.

I have no knowledge of them except that some of them knew Hitler. Other than that they're a total mystery and I have no idea why people have an interest in them. I don't recall ever having heard anything about them at all till a couple of years ago.

I think they're very interesting, and I like Nancy's novels. Not so keen on the nazi leanings of Unity and Diana, but entirely in sympathy with Decca.

I do like Nancy Mitford's novels, particularly Don't Tell Alfred but I haven't really pursued knowledge of the Mitfords beyond that, apart from knowing about Decca being the communist (I think) and Unity the fascist.

I like them as a general interest. Not too keen on Unity or Diana, or that one biographer who kept smacking down Decca for being a communist but excusing all Diana's little foibles.

Have you seen Slings and Arrows? Last year there was a Christmas exchange fest for vids and someone made a S&A vid about Geoffrey to a song called Unity Mitford. It was a nice tune and a good vid, but I think I made some weird faces listening to the lyrics. And then I interrogated my friends, because I was so shocked the vidder didn't know who Unity was, and apparently Mitfords are not all that widespread. D: I'm still shocked the vidder didn't, you know, GOOGLE before she made a vid to a LOVE SONG ABOUT HITLER.

I never expect people to be into the same things as I am, though, inconsistently, am often shocked at people not knowing things that I consider fairly common knowledge.

I have been into the Mitfords for decades, at least, Nancy and Decca, but at present I feel there may be a certain amount of barrel-scraping going on involving the entire family as a marketing category. I am bit ambivalent about whether I want to read the new autobiography of the last survivor, as I fear it may be about paying off old scores from that privileged position, also about how poor Diana was Much Misunderstood and such fun really.

I'm fascinated by the Mitfords but find I can only take them in small doses. After reading The Bigass Book of Letters between the sisters, I took a Mitford break before I went back to them.

I like the biography of Madame de Pompadour that Nancy wrote. Also I keep naming fictional characters Unity. For I like the name a lot and I first heard it in ref to the Mitfords.

I also like Keira Knightley, except in Pride and Prejudice.

I am a little interested in them, but then get a bit disconcerted about how popular/perennially fascinating they are - this is because I am both jealous of, and suspicious of, groups, cliques, clans and chums who do a bunch of cool stuff and meet everyone who's anyone, then get investigated and biographied without end. So, ambivalent.
I like them more recently because last week a chance enquiry about Unity led to about an hour of me and a friend inventing new Mitford sisters (Diversity Mitford, Philology Mitford, etc.).

I think they are utterly fascinating and I am always surprised when people don't share my interest - surely they cover such a wide spectrum of experiences that there's something in there for everyone?

I'm interested in the Mitfords, I like matching up their lives with Nancy's novels. I also keep talking about being on speakers with people which confuses David very much.


Not interested in Keria Knightley though. I have taken against her for no particular reason and refuse to be swayed.
