It was a travesty, as I had expected. The underlying film was mediocre, which was better than I had expected. There were several parts I actually laughed at, and I did like the plot part of the cool/outsider positions being reversed now that teen culture has moved on. BUT IT WAS DREADFUL. Mostly it was just very dull.
Specific problems;
BUT. The thing that makes up for all of the above, all of it:
HE WAS THERE. Towards the end of the film there's a scene where the biker gang come to a hotel room for a big shoot out, and it turns out that two of them are Johnny Depp (as expected) and PETER DELUISE (as desperately hoped, but not really expected, truly):
AND THEY DIE NEXT TO EACH OTHER, THEIR HEADS TOGETHER*, AND HANSON TELLS PENHALL THAT HAVING HIS BEST FRIEND AROUND FOR "THE ONLY APPROVAL I EVER NEEDED WAS FROM MY BEST FRIEND" AAAAAHHHHH.
I read afterwards that Johnny Depp made it a condition of his cameo that Peter DeLuise was with him, and that is just brilliant. He also made it a condition that he had to die, but I forgive Johnny Depp for hating JUMP! Street. (Only him. No-one else.) I also found Holly Robinson Peete's twitter, where she said that she basically rang up and begged to be allowed to do a cameo, and had also wanted to sing the theme tune, but they wouldn't let her. Ioki doesn't have a proper cameo, but he's on the TV in the background when they die.
* I love shots with peoples heads together like that, I have about a million screenshots of Paddy and Tucker doing it, and several thousand of Cybill and Maryann.
Oh my god. Peter DeLuise has joined twitter. He already had a sort of non-account, which he mostly used to tell people that a fake account that posted like twice wasn't really him, but now he is on twitter properly, and he mostly talks to his brother David DeLuise (Michael also has an account but doesn't tweet) and his wife Anne-Marie DeLuise and just posts pictures of his brothers and retweets people saying nice things about him. There is the dreadfuly wonderful horror that is THIS, for example:

1) the first tweet, is him saying that he has read some fic someone links him to. IT IS AU RPF FIC ABOUT HIM. It is not as bad as it could be, because it's mostly about him writing the show, BUT STILL. He should not go around reading fic that fans link him to. I worry that no-one has explained this to him properly.
2) The second tweet, is him talking about sex with his wife. I MEAN TO SAY. It is not like I have a problem with the idea of Peter DeLuise's penis, and it is nice that they joke sweetly and a bit rudely to each other BUT OH MY GOD.
I had been kind of hoping that he might get twitter, but I think maybe it was the sort of wish that is better unfulfilled. Michael DeLuise says that he is interested in "Quality of Life". His caps. I had found his facebook page a while back as well, and he was approving of the Iron Lady film, and I stopped looking because really. They are still awesome. But a bit terribly weird and upsetting.
Specific problems;
- ELITE squad of baby-faced cops, ELITE. The point was not that they were immature, it was that they looked young. YOU DON'T GET TO JOIN JUMP STREET BY BEING SHIT AT YOUR JOB. And they were just terrible, and that was meant to be a hilarious joke.
- The captain was a tool. They had this "clever" meta joke about it not being a stereotype that he was black and angry, which seemed to be a reference to Steven Williams' Captain Fuller, but Captain Fuller was nothing like him. Captain Fuller was supportive, and awesome. He was friendly without making the mistake that he was primarily their friend instead of their boss, and firm without making the mistake that he needed to ride them too hard.
- There were other officers in the "jump street" programme, but they didn't ever interact, and they were mean instead of supportive. It just took away the whole of the loveliness of the entire show, that they worked with other people and helped out and showed up on each other's cases, and made it purely about TWO KNOBS.
- Hoffs is in it! That wasn't the bad thing. She was in charge of the police cars they went to borrow. It was lovely to see her BUT she was a very good police officer in the early 1990s, quite possibly the best in Jump! Street, frankly, and well on track for Sargeant and future promotions, so why, TWENTY YEARS LATER, is she is she still only an officer, with a job handing out cars to BELLENDS?
- THEY USED THE MCQUAID NAMES. The McQuaid brothers are recurring identities of Hanson and Penhall. Doug and Tommy McQuaid. They are utter rebels and they dominate schools, and stop bullying and break rings of baddy teens, and it is the identity under which Hanson breaks a girl in the produce isle. It is an indentity with heritage, a proud name of goodness. IT IS TOO FUCKING GOOD FOR THESE FUCKING TOSSERS.
