I have done that thing where wearing a dress without a vest underneath looks absolutely fine when I first put it on and am standing still, but when I got into the lift at work the mirror revealed what Germaine Greer might call "three fat inches of cleavage". Still, my bra doesn't show, and that's the main thing, right? Still totes professional.

I cannot be bothered to watch the Dustin Hoffman video. Can someone who has seen it summarise? It is the one everyone's linking to where he's crying about something he Learned about women from being in Tootsie. I have to say I assume it's one of those things where if a woman says it she's whining and should focus on starving people (men) around the world instead, but when a famous man says it he is very insightful and very brave for even considering it. (It is possibly I am not in a very generous frame of mind today.)

Aha. I have been reading too much buzzfeed recently, and this article was a very good antidote.

There are some new/returning shows coming up on US TV that please me. Rachel Griffiths is a camp director in Camp, which I intend to enjoy very much while mourning the loss of Huge, which was a damn good show. I don't normally watch reality TV (not for snobbish reasons, I just don't get into them), but there's one coming up called Summer Camp where adults have to relive their teen days at summer camp. Previous reality shows I have followed include Boot Camp, Sorority Girls, and that one where Paul Burrell tells women they're not classy enough to be a princess because they gave a speech about AIDS, so this seems like it might be in my wheelhouse, whatever a wheelhouse is. Then Suits is coming back, which will hopefully spur more fic, as this is one of the few fandoms I read in (though I'm not in the fandom). Then Breaking Pointe comes back, which is a documentary about a ballet company in Salt Lake City featuring the fearsomely bitchy Allison. There is also something starting called The Writers' Room where shows have roundtables discussing their writing, but I suspect that will lead to me hating the writers and by extension the show, so I don't plan to see that.

There's nothing like the moment when having left the house in a perfectly reasonable outfit you get to work and see yourself - in the full-length mirror in the women's lavatories for me - and wonder what on earth you were thinking when you dressed.

I am also very much a sloucher at my desk, so I am currently being grateful for the monitors blocking my officemate's line of sight.

The Dustin Hoffman thing is not bad but perfectly ok to miss via summaries instead. Basically it's "oh I realise the massive prejudice I've been labouring under once it felt like it actually affected me personally for the first time ever". (When he got made up to be Tootsie he asked the makeup folks to make sure he could pass when walking down the street; but when he looked at what they did he said right, now make me "beautiful". They said, well, what you see is what we can do - yer not conventionally beautiful so suck it up. Cue sobs because he realised that he'd been overlooking all sorts of excitingly interesting women all along cos of being shallow and not being interested in talking to anyone other than conventionally beautiful women. Amour propre as revelation of prejudice.)

Thank you! That is not nearly as bad as I had been thinking.
