On looking at a job for which I meet all but one criterion - "oh no, that's far out of my reach, I couldn't possibly"

On looking at a job that is completely outside my orbit - "I could DEFINITELY manage infrastructure in the Falklands! How hard can it be to teach public policy? Architecture is just being clever with a ruler!"

You probably know this anyway, but your first paragraph is a phenomenon particularly experienced by women applying for jobs, whereas men are much more likely to go "I cover most of it, I'm fine".

I do indeed - I'm actually pretty good at getting past the first reaction and applying anyway when I think I'd like it. It amuses me that I seem to have boundless confidence in my latent abilities to tame lions, in comparison.
