I have to check every time I go to write it.

You should go uber-retro:
1494 FABYAN Chron. VII. 645 In whiche passetyme the kynge sent..vnto the forenamed John and hym by many meanys instaunsyd to leue the company of the lordys

From: [personal profile] jekesta
DO NOT CHECK. PUT IN ALL THE Ses and let it stand. JOIN ME omg.

Oooh yes, passetyme is nice, although I also likes the french, passe-temp. Because it is rather more something than hobby. Yes.

No no, I go to write "pastime" and then think "or does it have another s?" and then it DOESN'T. I like it without the sses.

And if you do this, you also get to form plurals by putting -ys on the end of things, which is much funnier.

In fact, I think we should do this in all commentys to [livejournal.com profile] slemslempike's journal postys from now on. Anyone want to join a Societee for Anachronistick Spellyngys?

How do you do possessivys?

Date: 2005-06-01 07:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sam-t.livejournal.com
I'm not sure. We could say thingys like '[livejournal.com profile] slemslempike her journal' (or 'their' if you prefer), although I'm not sure that that theory is still current. Alternatively we could strew 'y'ys randomly across the commentys and write '[livejournal.com profile] slemslempike'ys journal'. Which would you (would'st thou?) prefer?

Ordering drinkys would be fun. "That's three pintys of bitter, two lagerys, four white wineys - that's small glassys - and two rumys and coke." "That's twenty-three poundys and thirteen pence, please. Ice and lemonys?"

There's something wrong with my head when it comes to that particular word - I think of it as past time for no adequately explained reason, and cannot be swayed from my view. It surprises me anew whenever I discover that it breaks down to pass time, except even then they get it wrong. I suppose I'm thinking of the shop.

I always think that the shop is also swaying me. It's clearly missing either an s or a t, silly word. I never think of it as pass time, either. Damn that shop.

Your poll brings paranoia! I got all scared that 'pastime' isn't the right way of spelling it and had to look it up. So now my second answer is a lie!

The word brings paranoia to me! Everytime I write it I debate how many letters, and what the extra ones might be. I will remember after this poll though.

See, I tried to be that paranoid, but then the dictionary site crashed and I answered the poll anyway, for I am a Hardcore Speller.

My pastime = my hobby.

The option "pass time" is correct in its own way, but it doesn't say anything about what you DO.

From: [identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com
Yep.

I keep seeing variations, and I wanted to know whether it was random misspellings, or whether people thought that that was how it was spelt.

It's one of the few words/phrases that I write differently every time I write it - I know the correct one, but sometimes my brain freezes and I write pass time or even past time. I don't know why!

From: [identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com
I think it's because if you follow the meaning, it seems like it should be passtime, but it isn't, which is one of the lovely vagaries of the English langauge.

Depends entirely on context (in talking of Proust it would definitely be Past Time)
