It's boggling me - because when I first read a comment saying "the fat child" (oh, and they weren't being derogatory or anything, just as a description, which is fine), my first thought was "who? I missed that bit". I just don't remember him as being at all fat - and I find the difference in perception when looking at people very strange.
Yeah, mine too. I think it's mostly that I didn't see "fat" at all - and was rather confused as to who people were talking about at first, and now want to know if there's anyone else or if I have different perception or something.
Well, "TV-fat" is usually less fat than real life fat anyway, unless you're watching Lost. I think I was cued into in more by his out-of-breathness and his not-quite-breaking-into-a-run, which is TV drama shorthand for "kid who is last to get picked for the football team and has an inhaler". The way such characters turn out to be not so rubbish and are suddenly liked by the cool kids is a big cliche that this episode skirted worryingly close to a couple of times. Blame a childhood wasted reading Sweet Valley High ;-)
I complained to Andrew that he didn't seem fat, and he said, "He's TV-fat," which I think I agree with. Fat is (kinda) relative, and no one seems even normal-sized on TV.
