Victoria demands both supper and clothes for Miss Tyler: "I'm tired of nakedness." (Yeah, and 250 years later you still need a prescription for Plan B, you old bitch.)

So Jacob (Televisionwithoutpity recapper), in addition to misunderstanding at least half of the cultural references in Doctor Who and being too much of a fool to ask about them, thinks that Queen Victoria is to blame for the state of reproductive freedom in the United States? An entirely separate country both then and now? Although he's probably not aware of it, in Britain we don't need a prescription for emergency contraception anymore. And even when we did I don't think that there were many people refusing to sell it. But that aside, what? He also brings up the whole Victorians covering furniture legs for modesty and is generally rather dire. Last series I read the recaps because they were hilariously awful, and now he has sucked out the hilarity. Now I read because I like a nice bit of controlled hatred in my life.

I had a go at reading his recaps and found them pretentious and awful.

Also, the whole covering-furniture-legs thing was an American satirical invention in the first place.

Exactly. And even if it weren't, he has a rather strange idea of how history works. He sucks the fun out of Doctor Who, so completely, and I wouldn't have thoguth that was possible.

Just: Yes.

Okay, not just that. His recaps make me so grr, and thus I really feel better when someone else points out their uniquely moronic quality.

(oh man, and now I feel mean)

He's unbearable. And this shouldn't be a surprise to me as the vast majority of TWoP leaves me rather cold now, but it somehow is. They would be better written by someone who hated DW, sci-fi, Britain and everything they all stood for. I found the site through 7th Heaven recaps, which were wonderful. Deborah was very geeky about things on the West Wing, but she was interested in telling us things, not telling us that she knew things.

I used to like Aaron's recaps, and then somehow when someone else took over recapping one of his shows it just wasn't fun anymore.

Yeah. I didn't like the WW recaps much when LTG took them over either. But usually I've just mildly disliked new recappers. Jacob is the only one for whom I have such distaste.

And now I'm reading this weeks recap and my god, he even steals information from a post on the forums and doesn't mention that particular fact. Plus, followed his ocnvluted though patterns is tiring *rages*

I admit I went to TWOP for Dawson's Creek recaps, which were utterly hilarious, and only stay for the Smallville ones. I might try the 7th Hweaven ones, seeing as lots of people say they're awesome

I really did not like this last recap, and I've been a Jacob fan. It's too long, too convoluted, too self-consciously (and passive-aggressively) hand-wringing over what he said in a previous recap, and . . . yeah. I GOT THAT TENNYSON IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUR ANALYSIS STOP QUOTING IT EVERY GODDAMNED PARAGRAPH.

Argh.

But I still like the Farscape recaps he does, and last season's Who recaps were awesome because they matched my analysis of the season (I'm easy that way). Maybe I will just not read this season's recaps. The episodes aren't exactly thrilling me, anyway.

I didn't mind his analysis of the show too much, just that the way he writes is so gushy and self-aggrandising and he gets a lot of things just plain wrong and that annoys me. Ugh the Tennyson quotes. Do you know Tennyson, Jacob? Do you? Special little literary snowflake.

I have just trapped my finger in the desk, so I'm going to blame him for that as well I think.

Ow, finger! Yes, add that to his sins. I would!

The self-aggrandizing gets to me, but maybe not as much as it should because I'm that smug, myself. *shame* Hell, I was thinking about the Gnostic and Miltonian themes in Season 1 before he wrote about them, and I thought I was a geek. (Just not one getting paid by TWoP for my smug geekery, more's the pity. So to speak.)

I dunno. This season is annoying me, and reading Jacob slobbering over how hoooooot David Tennant is, isn't helping me love it. So, pfft, whatever.

The fuckity fuck? Since when is Britain's former monarch to blame for the fact that the US has got religious fucktards with a large hante-on for science?

Or is he trying to say that's the same sort of attitude? If so, hello, Queen Victoria lived some time ago so how shocking she might have attitudes to reflect that. OHNOES.

I have no idea. He is baffling, and mostly he seems to have sucked up all these ideas about what Queen Victoria might have been like in his little head and is using these to construct yet another incredibly tedious Important Point.

Gives her much too much credit too - one woman (even if she was Queen/Empress) can't change an entire society's outlook just by changing her views. Really.

And Queen Victoria loved the sex! And asked the doctor if there were any way she could have the sex and not have the offspring. He said there wasn't. She said, 'Am I to have no more fun in bed?' (probably a misquote, but I'm not googling 'fun in bed').

yes, she loved her Albert all right. wink wink nudge nudge.

I just found that Jacob guy's recap to be baffling and hard to understand. Plus, what is this Plan B thing he refers to? I wouldn't have known it was even a contraceptive if you hadn't said!

Plan B is the morning after pill. Or rather, it's a brand name for the morning after pill. I know it because I get a lot of US feminist emails about it.

Apparently she called having children the 'shadow side' of all the fun sex. Must get paper source for that, am going on a TV documentary at the mo...

If you do find it, do let me know. If she said "fun" at all, it will be very useful for random things to throw at my supervisors about fun and sex.

I don't know, 250 years later, maybe you will need a prescription for Plan B. 150 years later in the UK though, you don't.
