The Ladybird Book of the Police.

I skimmed idly by at first, thinking it was just someone posting pictures for us to see the style that old ladybird books used to have. (I used to do work that involved cataloguing them, the old ones were really lovely.) Then I suddenly registered that the text was not quite what I would expect...

It is freshers week. So far I have seen them queueing to register in the library, and watching large men set fire to office equipment in the square. The lack of a reading room is my procrastinatory excuse du jour.

I really love today's xkcd.

I know! I love the one about the policeman standing straight-backed because he is trained not to show any emotion.

That ladybird book is brill. I love the policeman who cycled after a nervous suspect and PC Barbara best. She may look a little sad, but she isn't.

I also love how XKCD includes Ford Prefect on their diagram. AS WELL THEY SHOULD.

I'm going to get the poster.

She just doesn't want to cry and be sick at work.

Oooh I remember the 'setting fire to things in the square' presentation. I got to use a fire extinguisher on a cooker. Thrills!

Really?! I didn't go to one of those at all, and I was thinking jealous thoughts about the Youth Of Today who get to use actual fire extinguishers on actual flames instead of sitting through a lecture like what I had to do in ye olden days. Well.

Ah, clearly you were moving in the wrong crowd during Freshers week. Ours was in Lonsdale Square, and there were a whole range of things on fire that we had to volunteer to put out. It was great.

But afterwards we got herded into a lecture theatre and shown photos of what happens when you leave your clothes to dry on an electric heater (answer: firey badness) and that scared the crap out of me even though I didn't even have an electric heater in my room, I had a radiator.

It was nearly a decade ago, and it still makes me shudder.

I love it! I really like the suggested readings at the end, and I'm sorry they're not available to read too.

Thanks to you, my dinner is probably burning as I read the Police Book.

That is, however, worth a burnt dinner.
