The feminist of the day feed just threw up Margaret Thatcher. Are we now defining feminist as anyone with a powerful position, regardless of how they acted within that position? I agree that women in authority should be celebrated, but that is very different from pretending that That Bloody Tory has feminist credentials.

This is a woman who said 'I owe nothing to women's lib'. What the fucking fuck? Yes, OK, the first female prime minister was a victory for feminism; it does not make the woman herself either a feminist or a feminist icon.

That is interesting (I like the f-word a lot), especially the pseudo-feminist quotes from Thatcher. I remember reading that she was much more woman-friendly before she was seriously successful, as a young MP much more sympathetic to working mothers.

Eeeeeuw! I think I once checked out this list and was vvv taken aback by some of their picks. My only Not-The-Scion-of-Evil-Forces piece of evidence for Thatcher would be her neutral, if not actively pro-choice, stance on abortion. In 1966 or so she wrote a moderately supportive response to David Steel re his intended Bill, and to the best of my recollection never threw herself behind the various campaigns to restrict the 1967 Act during her years in power (which she could have done). I don't think that this is enough, really. Really.

I once flicked through a book about women conservatives, and did a double take when it said, "of course, women who consistently vote conservative are intrinsically evil and self-hating". Turns out I'd missed the "not" in the middle of that sentence! The exhibition could be interesting, although the picture they have up of Thatcher on the website is rather less than flattering.
