slemslempike: (games: tp bring it)
[personal profile] slemslempike
One of the versions of Trivial Pursuit that I own is the "Book Lovers" game, which is American, and very very difficult. I am not sure whether it's difficult because I am not American, or whether it's really rather tough. I mentioned this to [livejournal.com profile] zoje_george, and she said I should post some questions, so I have. There are the questions from two cards (grammar is all Triv's). The first card I pulled out was actually comparatively easy from my point of view, but I thought it would be cheating to change it, so I didn't. The second card is much more like the general level of questions.

I know five of these. I hope not being American is the reason.

Fill the poll in so I can see which ones people know! I don't think I knew more than five. I can guess a few, but probably incorrectly.

I've just counted up properly, and contrary to what I said to [livejournal.com profile] callmemadam, I knew three. I might have been able to guess a further one, but only three definitely.

So I can answer four, but only if I include my nationality. I can include my nationality, right? I also know my own name if it will bring my score up to five.

Lynne Reid Banks is British! Otherwise... yeah. But it is a game designed for the US market (I had to get it from ebay, amazon wouldn't sell it to me), so I think that's largely fair enough. I just want to know if they're gettable for Americans!

I knew two, and guessed at one correctly - but that was kind of cheating because I put down two alternative guesses! So I suppose I should only get half a mark for that one. I'd like to see a British orientated book-Triv.

Are you going to make the poll answers visible later? Pretty please?

Date: 2010-01-27 12:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com
I shall post the answers - people's poll answers are safe! Though several are very funny.

I want a British book-Triv too!

I think these perspective issues are evident in an awful lot of games. My parents got a history one over Christmas - it was a good game, but skewed heavily towards players born in time to be aware first time of late 60s to early 80s politics. There were lots of questions for which my parents knew the answers, but my sisters and I didn't - we'd have known them for out generation. However there weren't equivalent questions for grandparents' generations.

From: [identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com
Yes, quite. I really like the 1980s trivial pursuit, which is pretty easy most of the time. I've got the US 1990s one, which is HARD, but I haven't tried the UK version.

Date: 2010-01-27 11:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] antisoppist.livejournal.com
That is horrible. And I usually whizz round the board on Art and Literature questions in the UK version. I'm crap at Finnish Triv though and blame that on it all being hugely cultural.

Since the results are not viewable to anyone, I can safely say that that was easy peasy and naturally I knew the LOT.

... wait, or is that 'not viewable to anyone except you'??? Because that's cheating.
