In passing.

It really is intensely annoying to have done the grown-up thing and refrained from responding in anger because of the possibility of saying things that you would come to regret, only to realise that you wouldn't have regretted it in the slightest, indeed it's possible you would not have gone far enough, and it is now too late to say even some of the things that would be so satisfying because the moment has most definitely passed.

Without having done it, do you think that you can know if you would have regretted it?

On a philosophical level, no, but in terms of how I feel now, yes.

For me, I always tend to weight the option that I didn't choose over the one that I did, and assume that it would have been better. But you are likely to be a better judge of such things than I am.

Yes. Although we have been reduced this morning to writing cathartic emails that we can't send. (I'm at work, this isn't the royal 'we'...)

I liked the thought of that being the royal we! Writing letters so condescending and pompous to someone so far beneath you that only the assumption of a crown can fully prepare you for the role.

Oh dear, I know that feeling. Have you tried writing a long pissy letter to the person and then not sending it?

No - it's not mostly something that I dwell on, but this morning for some reason I woke up cross and with the perfect cutting remark for the missed occasion in my head.

It's infuriating when that happens. I hope the crossness recedes soon.
