"Godwin's law states that "as an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1". This is both funny and true, like John Prescott having bulimia."

Fuck right off, David Mitchell.

God that's depressing. I might have to give up reading.

It's amazing how little effort one has to put into doing that. It happens to me when I'm barely even TRYING.

On the rare occasions when something isn't awful, I like to make up something to bridle at that just shows off my own prejudices, because I am clearly an enemy of democracy.

WTF?

Some people's definition of 'funny' just makes me hate them for their utter, utter callous unthinkingness.

I think that, for example, the author of The Rules getting divorced is something I would describe as funny. But that's because she peddles sexist shit claiming it will bring you a long-lasting and satisfying relationship. John Prescott has never been guilty of any hypocrisy about his weight, and people's mirth at it is based on fat-hating bollocks and a severe lack of understanding about eating disorders.

Dude, that would be both seriously funny and satisfying. Sadly, she'll probably walk off with a book deal from it. Which is almost as depressing as that quote.

"In 2001 the followup book The Rules for Marriage: Time-Tested Secrets for Making Your Marriage Work was released in the midst of Fein's legal separation from her husband. She subsequently divorced and married again eight years later."

From wikipedia, but I've seen it elsewhere too.

Yup, just as I suspected. Very satisfying.

*schadenfreuds*

My reading group has sometimes mused about the fun that could be had were we to (temporarily) re-define ourselves as a feminine reading group and read The Rules, but we couldn't quite bring ourselves to do it, or send money in the direction of the writer through either buying it or borrowing it from the library.

What the fuck?

David Mitchell is trying far too hard to be the new Charlie Brooker.

He generally does a good job of pointing out people's shittiness at going on about Ann Widdicombe's appearance, when there's better stuff to hate her for, but he's said stpuid things before. I think the attempting to be Charlie Brooker thing is a good point.

Maybe it's a reaction to that movement a few years back to anoint him the new Stephen Fry.

There are other options! He could try to be the new Jeremy Hardy. That's a brilliant goal.

Oh my god, Clare, what is wrong with you? That is CLEARLY HILARIOUS. It was like John Prescott KNEW that people would get bored of just being able to laugh at him for being fat after ten years or so, so he helpfully compounded it with a girly eating disorder. IT IS THE COMEDY GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING AND YOU KNOW IT.

Being a feminist has robbed me of what little sense of humour I used to have.

No no, surely you BECAME a feminist because you have no sense of humour so there was nothing else to do about it?

But women aren't funny to begin with? I know, because QI told me so and it's SCIENCE and everything.

Oh, I get it. 'Sense of humour', for a girl, means 'laughing at the boys' jokes' not 'making funny jokes yourself'.

David Mitchell isn't usually so full of fail.

I do really like him a lot of the time, particularly on The Bubble, and he tends to be one of the less objectionable panellists on Mock the Week, but this column isn't exactly out of character for him, and "insufferable twat" is pretty much what's coming across.
