I should like to state formally that I will absolutely NOT be playing the new scrabble rules, and anyone playing "Beyonce" on MY board can expect to see flying tiles shortly afterwards.

(Not that I often play. But STILL.)

(Actually I've only ever tipped up one board in my life, and that was chess, and there were extenuating circumstances.)

I'm assuming that there weren't the bad consequences to tipping over the chess board as when King Cnut did the equivalent when playing his brother-in-law.

I don't know what happened when King Cnut did it! Was it very bad?

This should have come out on 1 April. It's a disgrace.

I definitely checked the date on it. I have no objection to people playing their own rules and allowing proper nouns (well, I do, but in the privacy of their own homes...), but for Mattel to pretend that this is in any way ACCEPTABLE. Bah.

Cnut was losing, and the board got knocked over. His brother-in-law said, "That was convenient." Cnut said, "Are you saying I did it deliberately?" Brother-in-law said, no, just it was very convenient. Cnut lost his temper; brother-in-law fled; Cnut sent two men after him to kill him. They came back to report that he had taken refuge in the church. Cnut told them to obey orders, so they went into the church and killed him.

Well, it did indirectly contribute to someone no longer speaking to me, but I think that would have happened anyway. No deaths!

I don't know what they're thinking! Like, really, I don't know what this is going to bring to them. Well, publicity, I suppose.

Boo to that. I'm not getting up to date on popular culture.

I will not countenance this rule even for the opportunity to play "Finknottle".

OH. But yes. You're right. One must be steadfast.

WHY, MATTEL, WHY?

I mean I've played proper noun Scrabble, and SF scrabble for that matter, but that's only because it's fun to play with the rules sometimes and if they make it official, it just isn't.

I tipped up a monopoly board once. I was eight years old, thoroughly imbued with notions of honour from boarding school stories, and outraged to discover that all the adults, who would tell me off damn promptly should I try to lie, were cheating massively and not paying rent on a property I'd acquired and forgotten about as the property card had slipped under the board. (It was one of the cheap ones too.)

The iniquity! What happened when you tipped up the Monopoly board?

Yes! Exactly.
