Can you recycle old cassette tapes, or shall I just throw them away?

Also, how far back should I keep bank statements etc before I get to throw stuff away?

Do you bank online? If so, most of the time, you can extract a bank statement from the past there to print out, so the paper ones can be shredded cheerfully.

Tax documents however, I keep for 6 years.

That's true! I forgot about that. I'm totally throwing away my council tax notices from my last house too. Living it up!

I've got all my payslips etc for the last six years. And by etc I mean jobseekers forms.

I'm not sure you can put them in the standard recycling bins, anyway. Someone was giving me dire warnings the other day about trying to recycle video tapes that way.

In principle, I keep most things for six years, though I'm a bit random about actually keeping track and throwing them away after that...

If you're pushed for space/packing time, it's definitely worth seeing whether you can get old statements for free online. (I don't think I can go that far back with my bank.)

Yeah, STUPID BARCLAYS only let you see a month back on online banking, which is bloody ridiculous frankly. And they charge you some sort of administrative fee to get past bank statements printed. Man, I am so excited that now I have money I can LEAVE THEM.

Ooh! Turns out Natwest go back to 2003, so I can dispense with the paper ones entirely.

Now I just have to decide what to do with the statements from credit cards I no longer even have.

Got a shredder? I never just throw away anything with confidential information on. I know this is slightly paranoid.

Same here. And in addition to feeling more secure, there's something very satisfying about shredding large stacks of paper.

Not sure about audio cassettes - I know videos are tricky, though there are places you can send them for recycling. Last time I checked most of them actually charged a fee though. You could maybe donate them to a charity shop if they're purchased ones?

There was a one-off "bring out your tapes" recycling collection near us a while ago. I don't think it's economically viable to collect them for recycling in dribs and drabs though.

I can't think of many re-uses for them, but here's one.

That's a brilliant idea for them. I almost wish I'd saved some of mine now!
