slemslempikeI am without internet at home. I do not like this, less still that Virgin Media lied to me about sending someone over on Saturday, made me wait in all day and then got all bristly on the phone when I pointed out that I didn't actually like being lied to. It also affects you too, dear readers, as I am sure you have all been mourning my absence. Why, you have missed the re-runs of "I haven't done any work. This is hard. I hate this" as I struggled to work up the enthusiasm to do my corrections. I have a new best score on expert in Minesweeper of 122 seconds. (I reinstalled it in celebration after I submitted. I was a fool - I was right back on it the moment I had corrections to do.)
While not writing my corrections I watched some TV. I am rather taken with Three Men and a Baby, which I've always had a soft spot for anyway. It struck me as rather a bit of (partial) feminism - Sylvia isn't really vilified for leaving Mary on their doorstep, the female characters all quite rightly refuse to take on childcare, saying it's not their job, the men don't have magical masculine powers that make it all very easy - it's really difficult, but they find that it's worth it because they love Mary. And Sylvia talks about how she loves her job and Mary but it's just all too difficult on her own.
I also watched the Burghley Horse Trials, partly for the accents. One of the commentators said "year" most delightfully. I also rather love Mary King who was beaming and said that the spectators just liked her because she was so old and had been around for ages. Also I was fascinated by the riders who had done well saying that their horses had answered every question. I'm sure this is fancy equestrian talk I don't quite understand, but I have a loveyl image of horses finding the jumps just boringly easy, so having a general knowledge quiz as they go around. It would explain some of their mistakes, it must be rather difficult to concentrate on the number of your strides approaching an obstacle when you're trying to work out where on a human you would find a calf.
Oh, SPEAKING of quizzes, I hate the adverts for triv that are on Dave at the moment. They seem to have ruined the board (again), and apparently you can BUY wedges?? I hate the people playing it too, I wouldn't want to play with them. I have myself bought two new versions since arrival in Edinburgh - version 6 and the pop culture one. chiasmata and her girlfriend last week, and they were sadly far too American to be a relaxing game.
It was quite a good time to move here, as in addition to the excellent people who live here always, others have been passing through.chiasmata let me drag her for lunch as well as having supper with me to admire my flat, wonderlanded was around for afternoon tea on Sunday, coconutswirl was over on Monday and jinxremoving is here for a few weeks too. Familiar people are very helpful when trying to make a new place be familiar itself.
I like my flat a lot. The spare wardrobe was finally removed from my room, so I feel like I have it to myself properly, and it's starting to feel a bit more like my home. I seem to have lost my LotR and PotC figures in the move (along with some JUMP! Street trading cards and a picture), but if that's all it's not too bad. Our living room has a view of the castle, so last night we watched the firework display with music and commentary on the radio. Apparently there was a fantastic effect called a waterfall that they were building up to all night, but we were in the wrong position to see.
I'm at work now, and it's going pretty well. I can't work out how to lock posts by email (lj is blocked), so I can't really write about it. Maybe Virgin will pull through.
