So for a knit stitch, I bring the wool underneath the needle and then over the top. Clockwise, I guess. And for purl I do the opposite, sending it anti-clockwise over and then under? I don't understand the videos.
For a knit stitch, your yarn starts out at the back of the needle. You put your right needle into the front of the stitch on the left needle, from left to right, then bring the yarn under the right needle, up through the gap between the needles, then over the right needle, then pull the stitch through. It's going round the right needle anticlockwise if you look at it end-on.
For purl, start with your yarn at the front, put your right needle into the front of the stitch on the left needle from right to left, take your yarn over the right needle, down through the gap between the two needles, then under the right needle before pulling the stitch through. Again it's going anticlockwise.
If I get a chance tomorrow I'll scan in some pictures from my Simple Knitting book. I don't understand any of the videos or images I see online, but I do understand these.
I am not an expert, but as far as I know I do not twist my purl stitches. So we could meet up with knitting and see if we can work it out together? I also have a copy of The Knitting Answer Book which has an explanation of twisted stitches so I could bring that along if it would help.
I think I have worked it out through trial and error - at least, it all looks straighter without the gaps on the back now. But I would very much like to meet up with you (I need to return your wraps!) and you could double check my work!
Yes, I think that sounds like you're doing the right thing. And I've knitted in front of cherade9 often enough that she'd have told me if I was stitch-twisting :)
I have experimented with trial and error, and I now think I've got it just about right. It feels a little unnatural to be doing it this way now I've been knitting twistedly for my projects so far.

Hope this makes sense....
