I kind of really want to do this, but there is pretty much no justification I can make. I mean, what would I do with it?

I went to Stockport Museum of Hatting at the weekend. It was ace! I learnt a lot about historical methods of hattery - I hadn't realised that (high end) felt hats are made of fur. I now know what a planking kettle is used for as well. They had some lovely displays of hats upstairs, including pictures of famous people wearing hats, cases of religious headgear, and an information panel asking the question "isn't felt brilliant?". My favourite bit was the section with a whole load of hats and mirrors for you to admire yourself in different styles. I may post pictures another time. I highly recommend it as a way to spend half a day.

If you did the one shown in the picture, you could always use it to display a favourite top or scarf or necklace or something. Besides, does one have to do something with sculpture other than think on it?

The Hatting Museum sound totally brilliant. So when in 30s detective novels there's a reference to fur felt hats, that's just to indicate that it's a high end hat, not a furry hat? Coo! Also hats to try on and mirrors is brilliant!

I don't have anywhere to put it, is the main thing! I think I would like the experience, and to see the finished result, but I don't actually want to keep it. Perhaps I could donate it to the council and it could be public art.

I'm not sure now. There were also some properly furry looking hats that might have been fur felt? Or maybe it is just felt made of fur in the books!

Yes, it could totally be public art!

Goodness this fur felt thing is getting more mysterious! I shall just have to read more in the genre to see if I can determine from context whether it is top-notch hat or a merely furry hat that is being described.

It doesn't seem like the kind of thing that needs to be justified.

The only place I have to put it would be in the living room, and I'm not sure I'd be altogether comfortable with that!

They also have a yurt, and a community display about sport. But mostly hats. The people who made Kristin Scott-Thomas's hat in Four Weddings and a Funeral are also the UK agents for Stetson.
