My new favourite nano forum thread is

"What fruit would be the easiest to break someone's nose with?"

I'm not doing nano, but I am enjoying reading the threads. "Help! I'm writing a novel set in Russia (where I've never been) at the turn of the tenth century (which I know nothing about)! Do my research for me."

You have to wonder why someone would write such a novel (okay, you're probably joking about that quote, but still). What makes someone come up with that setting? It just sounds cool? I stick to writing things I know or can easily research at the library, so what do I know. :)

It is a slight exaggeration, but there are some posts that basically seem to be asking that other people do the research that they don't want to do, quite detailed in some cases. There are also a lot of threads saying "my main character is British, what slang would he use", which is difficult to answer, and why are they British, if you don't know what they would say?

I rarely write at all, so it's kind of mean of me to bitch about it, since they are at least doing something.

"Ouch!"

Is a coconut a fruit? If so, that'd be for and away the most effective nose-crusher.

That was my first thought as well. Otherwise, I can't think of any fruit that would break someone's nose. Perhaps something like a peach, with a pit, if very carefully wielded.

I think they decided on a well-thrown ripe apple. I think that if it hit at the right angle, it could well be broken.

AHAHAHAHA. Now, I really want to read that nose-breaking fruit novel.

I suspect it was only a very small part of the novel. Unless...it was a novel about a serial fruit thrower, who used to be a hired assassin, but got all moral, and decided he could no longer use traditional weapons, and would only harm people instead of killing them!! Or a disgruntled grocer!!! Or, or, a militant radical vegan!!!! She sees someone eating meet, she hurts them with the fruit!!!!!

That's enough exclamation marks from me.
OR IS IT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!

Pineapple! PINEAPPLE!

Now I will be so disappointed if I don't get to read a story about someone's nose being broken with a pineapple before I die.

I don't know, you see, because you'd have to throw that just right. If it hit with the business end, then yeah, blood and breakage. But if they mis-threw, and the leafy bits struck first, I don't say it wouldn't be painful, but significantly less likely to cause breakage.

Hmm. Research should be done.

True, true. I should think it'd be the right fruit to cause nasty facial mutilation and possibly put someone's eye out, though. Maybe not so good in the specialist, nose-breaking department. Do they have to throw this fruit? They can't just hold it by the leafy end and use it as a blunt weapon? 'Cause it'd be a great mace-type thing *ponders*.

I wonder if they'll let me do it in my special study module next year. It has a medical connotation!
