[Poll #1861891]

I was asking someone for a contact, who turned out to be called John Virgo. Naturally I said "presumeably not the John Virgo" (because you have to do that sort of thing to maintain a pretence of cameraderie in conversations with people you don't know very well at work, or at least I do), and he said "who?". I knew who John Virgo was even before I lived with [livejournal.com profile] jekesta, and despite almost never seeing Big Break as a child.

There was something else I was going to ask people but I can't remember what it was now.

I think he is a snooker player?

Yes, that is right! He was also on Big Break with Jim Davidson.

Jim Davidson

... who is a racist comedian? I think Big Break must have been on before something my family watched, as I remember seeing the end of it more than once but never really understanding what it was (it wasn't a snooker match, and yet people were playing snooker. Odd).

I think it was on before the Generation Game, which is why I often used to the end of it. (I loved the Generation Game!) I think John Virgo's trick shot was usually at the end as well.

It's strange - I used to see snooker quite a lot before I left home, whether the various tournaments or Pot Black, and then I've hardly had time to watch it since. So, in my head, people like John Virgo are still on telly, playing happily away, all looking exactly as they did back then. Accidentally catching some snooker on the telly these days, or seeing posts on LJ, is a real shock. Who *are* all these people? And what happened to Steve Davis's hair?

I ticked 'yes' but I meant to tick 'no', thus messing up your poll. Sorry. Am exceptionally stupid this afternoon.

Virgo's trick shots! Despite loathing Jim Davidson, I used to watch Big Break with my Dad... It's only a game but [put up a real good?] fight/we're going to be snookering you tonight...

Oh, you'd already done the theme song. I am therefore lame.

He is well old enough to know, as well!

Oh, I was going to ask. If it was a kid I'd be more forgiving, but still appalled. I worked with someone recently who didn't know what Blockbusters is.

Now that is shameful. Who would they ask for a P, if not Bob?

I now find myself wishing that at any one time there were only 12 professional snooker players, each named after a sign of the zodiac.

That sounds like the rip off of a murder mystery/hunger games mash-up. The Zodiac Frames.

It's only a game so put up a real good fight. I'm gonna be snookering you tonight.

Is that rude?

Jim Davidson was involved, so probably...

Do any of us really know who John Virgo is?

He is, to be fair, snooker's eternal enigma.

Probably Hazel does, and loves him anyway.

I asked the roomful of teenagers I am with and none of them know either so I am presuming he's not hip and yoof.

He is not in the slightest, no. I think if you don't follow snooker you'd need to have been around in the 80s to see him on TV, and only then sometimes, apparently!
