I'm trying to remember a list of 8 things, so thought I would try one of those memory devices where you assign them to other things. What has 8 things, I thought? Ah! Henry the eighth, I can assign them to his wives. Of which, it turns out, there are six. And I only know their first names, which would be even more confusing.

So, what has eight things that I would know? Octopus wouldn't work because they're all legs. I could do the rainbow and add octarine? Seven dwarves plus Snow White, except it takes me ages to remember all their names too.

You could use the 8-point version of the compass with NE and SW and all that lot thrown in. I lack other 8-part ideas.

Never eat shredded wheat. I will have to think of things for the other bits if possible.

Hm. If you have to create a means of remembering the memory tool, you might get stuck in an endless feedback loop.

Ooh, hang on - aren't there eight wonders? As in pyramids and whatever the other ones are?

Yes! ... do you know a mnemonic for learning the eight wonders of the world?

IT'S LIKE A MOBIUS STRIP.

Oh. Wikipedia says it's only seven anyway. Everything seems to be seven. I think you should remember a list of eight things instead.

I meant seven there. Obviously. But not so obviously that I don't want to CLARIFY.

It would be easier. Maybe I could match seven things, and then just REMEMBER one. Or not.

I've got one! Santa's reindeer. If you don't count Rudolph.

An uncle of mine who did this had set objects for each letter of the alphabet that he assigned things to. So if you've only got 8, you only have to use A to H. I remember his D was Dog and on the list of random words we got him to remember, the dog was carrying Weetabix in its mouth. I have remembered this for 30 years or so. It has been no use in my life whatsoever.

That is a good thought. I remember a can of coke being 3rd in a list and we claimed it cost 30p (even then that was too cheap).

Kings called Henry? Although the ones without a Shakespeare play aren't very easy to tell apart.

I don't know anything about the Henrys. So that would just be numbering them, which has already proven less than helpful!

The first eight Chalet School books? Or another book series which has eight books? The action song "Head, shoulders, knees and toes" which also has "and eyes and ears and mouth and nose"? The seasons and their midpoints, e.g. spring, vernal equinox, summer, summer solstice, autumn equinox, winter, winter solstice?

I like head shoulders knees and toes! Chalet books and seasons I would still have trouble distinguishing, I think.

I think action songs are the way forward to memorising everything!

Colours of the rainbow + night? Narnia books + The Allegory of Love? Harry Potter books + The Casual Vacancy? Hmm, I see your problem.

I don't accept it, but I could pretend to for the purposes of memorisation. Thank you!

... pickles?

Presumably planets, but I was puzzled for a bit, there. Branston pickle, pickled onions, lime pickle, pickled eggs, piccalilli, those things you get in slices in burgers, pickled gherkins, pickled red cabbage ... and Pluto.
