i mortally wounded my laptop. anyone know where in Brussels I could go to a) retrieve the data and b) check it's not cheaper to repair (if possible) than replace?

I AM VERY SAD ABOUT THIS.

Ooh, I'm sorry. Obviously I know of nowhere but I hope someone else does. When my desktop died comprehensively in 2011 I managed to retrieve everything easily and cheaply, so probably it'll ALL BE FINE, probably. Best of luck.

I think that if the data can be retrieved then I wil feel almost fine about it. It's given me the best years of its life, and I'm only soery that its end came (inadvertently) at my hands.

It's easily done - I very nearly mangled my netbook last week at your flat. Combined jetlag and insomnia hit me: I fell asleep with it on my lap and woke up to see it suspended in mid air. Reflexes I didn't know I had kicked in and I caught it before it hit the floor, but it was a close thing.

also, might be worth looking into cloud back up - I use crashplan and while the intial upload was v.painful, the fact that it is backing up set folders to somewhere offsite (as well as my external hard drive) is very reassuring.

I seem to remember multiple techy places around the city centre, and some in the area near to Zaventem or Diegem. If you're stuck, I can probably check with some ex-colleagues in Brussels to see if they have any helpful suggestions.

Yes please! I have some possibilities to follow up, but the more options the better. I have now decided not to bother about repairing, and just need somewhere cheap to take the data off the hard drive for me. (And then I buy a new laptop.)
