I really enjoyed this article in the New Statesman about taxidermy. It is very funny, and only a little bit utterly disgusting (how one empties the skull of its contents). I was going to add that I was glad not to live in her houseshare, but actually I would probably be an excellent housemate for an amateur taxidermist, as I do not particularly mind dead birds in freezers, though I would hope that she would clean up the stray stomach contents before I came across them. Maybe the smell would not be the most pleasant thing as well. Hmm. The author, Hayley Campbell, mostly only has reviews on the NS site, but I was delighted to find that she has a a blog. It would have been more helpful to have found it when I did not actually have things to do, but there you go. Can't have everything. (Also have just read a post of hers that is pretty horrible about breastfeeding older children. Really can't have anything.)

My brother shared a house with a taxidermist for a while. She had a chest freezer in her bedroom filled with dead animals. I couldn't decide if she and it was amazingly awesome or very weirdly scary and creepy. There were no smells of any kind. This is her - http://jazminemileslong.com/

I've been avoiding reading that article for about a week and then I accidently read it while eating my lunch - I am an idiot. (I also had to stop half-way through.)
She is also good fun on twitter and I think she looks ridiculously like Angelina Jolie, but much better craic.

The woman who owns one of the village knicknackery shops is married to a taxidermist and it's a bit disconcerting when you wander round in December looking at bath melts and necklaces and Keep Calm and Carry On mugs and there is suddenly a sign asking whether any of your loved ones might like something they have shot stuffed for Christmas.

We should do this! They are gloriously old-fashioned in museum terms, and some of them are a bit shabby too, but that makes it even better.
