Covering McKellen - David Weston
I'd heard of David Weston's book before and wanted to read it, so when I found that it was £1.50 on the kindle I snapped it up. It's a diary of the year he spent on tour with the RSC playing The Gentleman in King Lear (and a supernumary in The Seagull), and understudying Ian McKellen as Lear (hence the title). It started off pretty good, really interesting about the process of putting together the production, and amusingly catty asides about cast members. However, as the tour gets underway and the book continues, it gets rather tiresome, alternating between unpleasant sniping about the younger cast members, and obsequious commentary on Ian McKellen's Lear and Trevor Nunn's direction.
