As if the 10 11 years of estrangement weren't heart-wrenching enough, the description of Copenhagen watching and nearly letting Marengo die alone, and then a letter because there was nothing else he could think of to do and I have just started crying again because it was so awful and good.
I wasn't being hyperbolic about the crying either, I started halfway through Copenhagen's final letter, and didn't stop until a little while after the end. It was so Copenhagen not to really get what Marengo wanted, and so Marengo not to tell him what he really wanted, and I am so happy (while obviously still traumatised) that he was there when he died. Oh Copenhagen.
Have you not listened to any of the Warhorses of Letters radio series? Oh my horsey god! They are very, very funny. I also did tell Sarah about it and if she hasn't listened she has only herself to blame. Also she's coming to see me on Friday so I can make her listen to them then.
