Re-reading the Cazalets series is great because it's lovely and familiar and I know it's going to continue great, but at the same time I've forgotten loads of things about it, so it's still like a new story. I have two navy-related questions. 1) What's the story behind the wavy navy name? 2) I knew from other books that naval officers weren't supposed to carry parcels, but here it's referred to as a law, and I'm not sure whether that's Clary not knowing, or there was a proper actual legal rule rather than a social one. Also was it only naval officers, or all officers? And why - to have hands free to salute, in case there's a bomb in the parcel, or because it all looks a bit common darling?

I really like The Toast. Some of the writing can get a little overblown and samey, but the articles by Mallory especially are great. And so are (most of) the commentators - I like the reactions to this guy who would love to write a comic where the female characters are better drawn... but it would involve him having a hard conversation, so he hasn't. And isn't that really what feminism's all about, actually, hmm?

I'm feeling quite chipper today, but I don't know why. I was feeling dreadful yesterday and the work hasn't gone away or anything.

I think that the wavy navy name refers to the stitching on the uniform (epaulettes? lapels? sleeves?), which were wavy for the merchant navy but straight for the Royal Navy.

Oh, I see! I was confused because surely all navies had waves to contend with, and wondered if it was because the reserves were less used to being at see so they wobbled. I realise now this was not the most sensible idea I've ever had.
