If you go here and scroll down to "size comparison", it shows you the size of a nook compared to a paperback book and passport, both of which are standardish sizes and useful to know about; a wallet, which is less so but I guess handy; and... a piece of toast. Who on earth uses that as a unit of measurement? It's hardly a London bus.

Also, if you toggle between the toast and the passport, the toast is slightly smaller than the passport. I do not have my passport to hand, and I am so confused by the whole idea of using toast to choose the size of your ereader that I may have completely misunderstood bread sizes, but is that not a particularly small piece of toast? Is bread not usually larger than a passport? I can fit my passport in my jeans pocket, but I would not expect to be able to do the same with some toast.

I think I am going to get a Nook despite this. I decided that I really want an ereader with buttons to turn pages, not just swiping/tapping, and the Nook has a built in light and the non-paperwhite Kindle with buttons doesn't. Also borrowing ebooks from the library seems like a smashing idea. Does anyone have a Nook and want to tell me about it, good or bad? Did it live up to your bread-size expectations?

You can read library books on a kindle reasonably easily but slightly illegally. I feel like as long as you don't send them to anyone else and you do check them out of the library, it's the same end effect. Possibly. Our library only has terrible ebooks though.

A light would be v useful. I've got the basic kindle without one. I wouldn't want a touchscreen.

It sounds like it would be the same end effect, if it's illegal for the Kindle rather than for the library, they'd still get/pay the same fees, wouldn't they? I feel like library ebooks would be great for me, because they automatically delete and you don't owe fines, which is why I don't use the library as often as I should.

Jess says that lights are good for Juba because often there is no reliable electricity.

I would say only a slice of fruit loaf is smaller than a passport.

I have a basic Nook and it's fine - you can load up pdfs and change the font on them, which is good for reading academic articles and friends' fiction (although they often look weird).

Mmm, malt loaf too.

articles and fic would be good as well, and I wouldn't mind too much about weird formatting.

That's an unusually puny slice of toast. It's like that diet bread that's low calorie on account of its being tiny. Or Indian leavened bread, which was designed for elves.

I have no knowledge of the Nook though. Sorry. Only toast.

Good, I glad I haven't been unusually greedy about toast sizes. It's surprisingly hard to remember the size of foods in an abstract setting.

The biggest after-purchase surprise with the new Nook seems to be the fact that its onboard space for sideloaded books is very limited - most of its memory is reserved for B&N books. Not an issue if you don't want hundreds of books on your device, but still, there it is.

I'm a Kobo person myself, mostly for the font management; but I've not had a chance to get hands-on with a Nook yet (they don't sell them in Australia).

And yes that is very small toast.

That's good to know, thank you. I think the model I'm looking at has a slot for a micro SD card, which might help. But in general I think I'll be happy having fewer books on there.

I'm afraid the current one has no card slot. If the one you're looking at has that, it's the older Simple Touch Glowlight. That one's heavier, and has pretty major issues with the fragility of the light layer - it readily develops scratches and holes, which show as very distracting bright spots.

A slice of bread should definitely be bigger than a passport...

The box of books has arrived! I spent a luxurious evening dipping in and out of them.
