[Poll #2022032]

I HATE having my chair pushed in for me. It is partly that it's awful in and of itself, but also that men don't have to have it done for them, which irritates me even further. I dislike the feeling that I can't just do it for myself, and they never get it right so I have to resettle myself afterwards anyway, and it's just really uncomfortable, having someone try to fold you into a chair by pushing it at you from behind. Once a waiter did it to me and the chair had a low bar between the front legs, which he rammed into my heels.

For the duvet, I can see that it looks all nice and neat, but I don't sleep nicely and neatly, I sleep with the duvet wrapped around me and sometimes with a foot sticking out. The hotel I'm in at the moment is particularly vicious with their tucking, so I can't just push it out with my feet after I get into bed, but have to make sure to untuck it all beforehand, and that often means the bottom sheet comes off as well and I have to try and remake the foot of the bed.

Hotels that don't have fitted bottom/under sheets should lose a star for that, possibly two stars. I'm reasonably sure no hotel without fitted sheets should be allowed more than three stars. /personal grump

Of have fitted sheets that don't go far enough down the sides of the mattress to actually stay on. I care more about that than most other signs of a "good" hotel.

On a quick read, I was picturing a hotel with bed attendants who appear when you're getting into bed to tuck you in, like my children want me to do every night for the rest of their lives (I suspect that may change in time.)

Oh, that would be very awkward indeed.

I thought that too. *goes back and changes answer*

ME TOO. Although my answer hasn't changed on discovering that this is not the case.

I was so confused the first (and only, I think) time a hotel rang my room and asked if I'd like someone to come and turn down the sheets.

I think it was in Zanaibar when someone appeared every evening to sprinkle new rosepetals on my bed - which was awkward, because they'd picked a time when people would be at dinner, but I was on holiday mostly to sleep, so I was always there, obstructing her access.

One of my kids at summer camp pulled my chair out for me as I came to sit at his table at breakfast. I was actually gobsmacked.

Truth is, I've never been much bothered by the chair pulling thing. I only really recall it happening at pretentious restaurants and I'll be fretting about other stuff then - such as... "this bloody expensive meal had better not be miniscule!"

Totally agree on the sheets though.

I think I've had it happen much more abroad, at places which I guess are pretentious for most people in the country, but relatively standard for me.

I clicked on yes for the duvet tucking, but only because I find it very satisfying to slide into a bed and then viciously untuck everything.

That is quite fun! Another fun thing for sheets that I discovered in Juba is when you are in bed and wish to go from a tidily folded square to a functional sheet, you can just hold it in one hand, kick at it with your feet, and then the polyester makes sparks!

I don't hate the chair pushing in as much as you, but it becomes something else to co-ordinate and be anxious about.

I LOATHE the tucked-in duvet/sheet. I sleep with the duvet tucked in and around my legs, and so I untuck everything before getting in hotel beds. I've also noted that some hotels* seems to have a duvet that just covers the length of the bed and the end of the duvet cover is flat cloth that is tucked in, which is too much cloth flapping around with no duvet in it. And the bottom sheet isn't long enough to tuck in either in hotels that are have those, and then the bottom sheet wrinkles up with all my tossing and turning.

* Premier Inn and Travelodge, but they're not the only culprits.

Ooh, yes - I've encounted the fake duvet cover flap bit!

I have only had the chair thing happen once or twice but it was very awkward and uncomfortable.

I like to sleep with the duvet round me and often a foot sticking out too.

It's the only way to be. On occasions where I've had to share a duvet I've really hated having the gaps instead of all of it around me.

I loathe the chair thing. It's a bit like when hairdressers put the protective gown things on you - awkward and weird. I've been sitting on chairs and putting clothes on for quite some time now, I can do it myself...

Yes, that's always awkward - though I at least know it's coming so I can prepare. And I always find if I do try to do it myself it's one of the ones that fastens the other way - grr.

I don't like having my chair pushed in for me because it makes me feel like a helpless toddler in a high chair. And because they never get the distance right, so I still have to do it myself afterwards.

Yes, that's exactly right! Like a toddler pushed where other people want them to go.

I cannot sleep without the duvet tucked under my feet. I recently worked out that this probably comes from a story in an infant school reader where a man brought a frozen snake home, it thawed, got into his daughter's bed, and bit her. Looking back, it was a very cruel story and I wonder whether I remember it correctly...

A little light googling shows it to be one of Aesop's fables.

That does sound quite cruel, and also perhaps the basis for a lot of urban legends.

Chair: not sure if I'm alone in this never happening because man or because recluse

Duvet: How big are these duvets that they can be tucked in? I couldn't tuck in me own duvets. OR COULD I?

I am now trying to think about whether it's never men in my experience. I definitely mostly have it happen to me when men don't have to, so there is that.

I guess they are bigger than usual? Maybe a kingsize on a double?
