Less in honour of the first British man in space, and more in honour of Helen Sharman, here is a picture I drew when I was little (7 or 8, maybe?), and found last year in my parents' house.

But if the moon is the thing in the sky labelled 'M', where are the craters?

When I was about that age I wrote a report on space flight which was (a)written on purple sugar paper, (b)written in crayon, and (c)completely confused about the difference between a shuttle and the Saturn V in terms of which bits fall off what, so probably gave the impression that it was designed to get halfway to Space and then self-destruct. I bet my teacher was delighted.

I thought your astronaut was wearing a rather fetching double-breasted spays suit and the round things are a double row of spays buttons.

Some planets have craters. Your astronaut could be on Mars, although I think those craters are probably a bit bigger than depicted in your drawing.

Of all the glorious details my favourites are "spays" and the doorknob on the door into the spayship. All spaysrockets should have proper doorknobs.
