Less in honour of the first British man in space, and more in honour of Helen Sharman, here is a picture I drew when I was little (7 or 8, maybe?), and found last year in my parents' house.

Please note adorable spelling worthy of The Visiters, happy face of astronaut, and the moon labelled "M".

Danish flag! I'm imagining little Clare saying "space" to rhyme with "plays".

Spays seems to be full of mushrooms.

Do you mean my artistically drawn craters? Though I see the astronaut seems to have picked up some sort of rash from one of the CRATERS.

But if the moon is the thing in the sky labelled 'M', where are the craters?

When I was about that age I wrote a report on space flight which was (a)written on purple sugar paper, (b)written in crayon, and (c)completely confused about the difference between a shuttle and the Saturn V in terms of which bits fall off what, so probably gave the impression that it was designed to get halfway to Space and then self-destruct. I bet my teacher was delighted.

Huh. Good point. Do planets have craters? Or maybe I meant to label the circle with an E for Earth?

Some planets have craters. Your astronaut could be on Mars, although I think those craters are probably a bit bigger than depicted in your drawing.

Clearly, I am a rubbish art critic. Obviously, artistically drawn craters.

I thought your astronaut was wearing a rather fetching double-breasted spays suit and the round things are a double row of spays buttons.

I have no memory of drawing it, but it makes me rather happy to see.

Lovely! I'm going to go through my memories box and find my Helen Sharman autograph and post it when I get chance :)

Oh wow! How did you get her autograph?

I met her on a school trip to Jodrell Bank :) She was really nice, we bonded over both being Helens.

I hope I've still got it now...

Of all the glorious details my favourites are "spays" and the doorknob on the door into the spayship. All spaysrockets should have proper doorknobs.
