Hargeisa is the first place I've been to where I've had to cover my hair outside. It's not very strict, so we can walk around with fringes etc on display, but you do have to have the headscarf. The other day when I got to the guesthouse I pushed back my scarf in the interval between knocking on the gate and waiting for it to be opened and the guard TOLD on me! Though he followed it up with "but she has hair like man so no problem". HMMM.

What are you wearing on the rest of you with your headscarf? I've never been anywhere that you actually have to cover your head outside. Though ironically I look rather good in a headscarf/wimple, so I always feel a bit glam wearing them in mosques, which is probably not the point!

Today I am wearing long kitenge-print skirt that reaches my ankles, purple t shirt with highish neckline, and hoody on the top. Yesterday I had loose black trousers (which have a thigh hole alas, which is dreadful because they are the best trousers ever and I got them in a charity shop and might never be able to replace them), with a floaty red shirt.

Bring the black trousers with you next time you're here, and I will darn them for you.

That would be very kind of you! I'm not sure they're darnable, it's less a broken hole and more a fabric worn away by thighs and the edges are very thin hole.

All of my pairs of jeans except my best pair I hardly ever wear are like that. I took them to a repair shop who put a patch on the inside and then machined over the top a lot. The repairs aren't very visible and would probably be less so in fabric that's thinner and easier to match colours with.

Hope it's not too hot and sticky. I went to Iran in August and ended up with hijab-rash!

Also, the man-hair thing. I've always wondered, since hair is so dreadful, could one shave ones head and skip the hijab?

No, it's very pleasantly mild here. Hijab rash does not sound fun at all.

I didn't realise it was only long hair that was a problem.

I don't think it is, you have to cover it no matter what, but he was less bothered becasue it was short, I think.

Ah. I was confused because there's a Muslim character on Eastenders, and in scenes where she's not wearing the hijab she has the most beautiful short hair I've ever seen, and I didn't know if that was a cultural thing too. I guess getting my facts from Eastenders isn't the best thing though. Or maybe the headscarf's different from the hijab. I guess I just never thought about people being bothered about hair being covered and what the hair looked like uncovered, before. Shows what I know, I guess.
