39 Steps

Has anyone seen The 39 Steps, as in the play that's 4 actors playing 150 roles and was best comedy? If so, how much of it is dependent on having seen the film? I actually haven't read the book either, but could do so in time.

I hadn't seen any of the films, but thoroughly enjoyed it. I probably missed a layer of a couple of the jobs, but they were funny enough just with what was on stage, even if you didn't get the parody or ironic bit of that particular joke.

It was hilarious, though. I would suggest you read the book, or at least a synposis, because it does move really fast (it also barely follows the book, but at least you know who's who a bit). That said, my sister had neither read the book nor seen the film, and she followed it fine and roared with laughter the whole way.

Thanks - I think I might give it a shot then.

I saw it in the Tricycle and Jack Devenport, Jonathan Aitken & Michelle Gomez were all in the audience (all rellies of the director).

But celeb-spotting squee aside, no you don't need to have seen the film, but I'd say its MUCH more fun if you have.

I don't think I will get to see the film by the time I'm thinking of going to see it, but it sounds like it could be worth it anyway. Even if my audience is less likely to contain Michelle Gomez.

I have seen the play! I have not seen the film! I loved the play and I want to see it again! I am using exclamation marks!

Yes, and it is very funny. I have seen the film more than once. However I think that given the number of times it has been spoofed and that everyone knows the tropes that come up, actually seeing the film is not necessary. (It might help to know there is a plane in it at one point.)

Is it the 39 Steps that gets referenced in The Marlows and the Traitors? If so, that is in fact my main reference point for it. I'll try reading the book to get a hold of the salient facts.

I don't know - I wasn't a big fan of TM&tT. Thoguh I think to be honest that the Wikipedia article will give you enough of an idea for the play! It isn't a subtle retelling.

None. It's brilliant. Go!

(edit:) I do recommend the book, though - longtime favourite of mine.

That seems to be the consensus! My main motivation is that tickets appear to be £10, so if at all good, worth it.

I am down in London in two weeks (24th). Are you free for dessert-first lunch that week, either Tuesday or Wednesday?
