A poll for a morning, a Thursday morning, apparently, which means that I must remember to buy the Guardian to get the booklet about Freshers Week.

[Poll #1446248]

And I would have posted about this horrible review in the Independent before if I'd been here. I haven't seen The Girlfriend Experience, though it sounds interesting, and I've no idea if his other criticisms are valid, but this:

One of them, the elephantine Tessa (Debbie Chazen) giggles nervously about going to see a play that she's in.
There's no point in not saying that these huge and unappetising women come across as being incredibly sad and curiously stupid, with their whale-like lolloping around

is fairly vile no matter what.

The worst kind of pub quiz questions are the ones about sport.

And my current answer to your final question is 1 but a year ago (when I did drink) it would have been 7 or 8, I think.

I can sort of see the sport ones because it's a valid category of questions. But motorways are just BORING.

You left out 'a team that IS Oxbridge', which is usually my pick because I feel so sorry for them if they lose.

It wasn't left out, it was a deliberate choice! Partly because there are far too many of them swarming around the competition.

I'm not sure whether 'pessimistic' is a word that I'd choose for you unprompted. I think you see problems that might arise, and you worry about them. Hmm, now I put it like that, so do I!

I'm hopeless in quizzes at pretty much anything that involves current popular music or sport.

Date: 2009-08-20 09:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] slemslempike.livejournal.com
We are generally pretty good on the music round proper, and more general questions, but "what year" utterly stumps us. We are always one year out. Our quiz doesn't have a sport round, and when related questions pop up there is usually one person who knows enough to get it.

So far, most people think that they are optimistic, and most people think that I am pessimistic. I might do a thing to see if it correlates.

I've just passed my driving test so am now free! free! to go to parties and evening socials with ease. And even though I very very rarely drink, now I'm thinking, "But I won't be able to drink any more!" which just goes to show that a) I have a pessimistic personality and b) the grass is always greener.

I probably overstated the whole 'lifestyle' thing. My lifestyle would remain the same, but my social life would be nearly unrecognizable. That might not be a bad thing.

I don't know if you're a pessimist, but I think you're well aware of when things go wrong or how they could potentially go wrong. I chose optimist for me because, while I may be aware of those things, I much prefer to stick my head in the sand and sing a happy song.

Do you think you'd mind being sober around all the other drunks? I waver on that. My pub quiz time can sometimes be a bit weird about me not drinking. No I would not like some vodka in that, that's why I asked for ORANGE JUICE and not VODKA AND ORANGE.

At the moment it is pretty much 60/40 people thinking they're optimistic/pessimistic, and 40/60 people thinking I'm optimistic/pessimistic. I can't quite work out what I think I am. I keep being told my work is negative and I think it's quite positive to say "no, this isn't as good as it gets, this isn't okay yet".

Thank you! But I have my own copy now, which was quite disappointing. but only 30p on campus.

We tend to do quite well on these, and usually there's either a theme for all intros, or a theme linking them two at a time, so we can stick a guess in. Our music round is one question where he reads out the lyrics in a completely different rhythm and tone to the original, then one where he plays us a tune on a stylophone, then five standard guess the intro, and then guess the film/TV show.

I think that fact that I had to go back 36 hours to get the last five things I've eaten is a sign that I need to eat more, or at least more frequently. In my defence, I was having a duvet day yesterday, and there is no sense in eating a separate breakfast if you only wake up at lunchtime.

That reviewer seems very confused indeed whether Debbie Chazen and the other actors are in fact actors or really prostitutes. Far be it from me to suggest that he has trouble telling the difference between women who are being paid to be 'appetising' to him and women who are not when he's outside a theatre, as well.

Date: 2009-08-20 12:45 pm (UTC)

Yes, very. Also, that there is apparently no difference between "not attractive to me, personally" and "objectively hideous to everyone". It made me want to see the play more, actually.

Um, I expect that this answer will make everyone hate me, but I usually support a university challenge team that IS Oxbridge. Or at least, Oxford. Does it count as 'personal allegiance' if it's the same university, but a different college? I don't know.

I decided to be firmly in opposition to the crisp thing, which I've never encountered, probably because I don't go to parties. Even if I like both flavours. 'Cause someone else might not and it would be vexing for them. Ain't I altruistic?

Also I tried to click 'not oxbridge' about 97 times. I know there are more important things. Sort of.

If you're interested in more detail on optimism/pessimism - I would put us both as 'realists*' (though I think it's hard to tell from just 'knowing' you on lj). But I have been told by numerous people that if you say 'oh, I'm not really an optimist or a pessimist, I suppose I'm something more like a realist?' then you're probably a pessimist. *shrug*

* though 'I'm a realist' always sounds a bit pretentious.
